She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Yes and she has done it!! She has hatched off at least one chick :woot Day 21 today for her and I checked a little earlier, she fluffed up and out popped a little chick from under her!! So pleased for her that she has actually managed it. She's still on the nest so not sure on the other eggs as I don't want to disturb here too much. Will post some pics when she brings it/them off the nest. Can't believe I've got a polish that has actually managed the three weeks and something has hatched :yesss:
I forgot all about her! That's amazing

My little ones are really starting to develop their top hats! I can't believe how fast their feathers grow!!

Congrats on pips. Are the 7 weeks in the run that's attached to the main run or did you change your setup?

Yes, the two flocks share a common wall made of mesh. So they have been seen by each other for 3 weeks now.

I just put the 3 week olds into the young flock run...some pecking, but in general not too much interest in them...for now.

My first hatch of this set, taken seconds after he kicked out.

Interestingly, he is the youngest egg in the set, being laid the day I put the set in the bator.

Every day of egg age after 4 days delays hatch by roughly half an hour. When I set two to three week old eggs, they are always the last to hatch. I think when I set this last batch I wlll load the incubator with that delay taken into account, oldest eggs first, let them warm, then continue to fill in reverse age order for an all-at-once hatch.

And he's a cute one, even all wet.

Hi everyone, just discovered this thread so thought I'd share my experience of incubating/hatching eggs. Last year i successfully incubated eggs for the first time in a make-shift incubator that cost me nothing. I used a old cupboard with a glass door, put a light inside, a digital thermometer, some containers of water and a shoe box with a towel and the eggs in it. I had no humidity gauge so no idea what the readings were. I adjusted the temperature by opening and closing the door. That was kind of a pain because i had to keep checking on it day and night to make sure the eggs didn't get cooked! But it was worth it :) Out of 10 eggs 1 was infertile and 2 quit early on, the 7 others all made it successfully to hatch. I was really worried they'd not make it after reading all the problems people have with incubating and getting the conditions just right. Maybe it was just luck, but i think i did well considering i didn't spend a penny and made the incubator from things i had already in the house. This year I've had a broody hen so let her do the work. The chicks have been hatching over the past few days, but now she's left the nest and is sitting with the chicks on the floor instead and I've had to adopt the last egg which i currently have in my bra! I've candled it and it's starting to break into the air cell now and i can hear it pecking inside. Fingers crossed now for the bra method! lol
Let me know! If it works I just may try it. Lol!
Good news and bad news. Good...I have 5 pips so far. Bad...1 of my 7 week old hens was killed in the main coop an hour ago. I had been in that coop not 10 minutes earlier...:barnie ...and it was one of the few almost pure white ones I had... ...so I scooped all the others up and threw them back into the young flock...I will try again at 8 weeks. Die and learn I guess...
Happy and sorry for you all at the same time.
Nope, not gonna do it. Really really want to, but not gonna :gig
Hahaha! You know you want to.

Yea! Good on her!

Cute!

Your both right, frizzle to frizzle is not ideal as the feathers will be very poor if any at all in some cases, as your neighbours roo looks RubyNala97. How you have described him I would 99% say it's from breeding frizzle to frizzle. The hatching eggs I sell are a 50/50 chance of being frizzle and I always point this out when I sell. All depends if the developing chick gets the frizzle gene from the frizzle parent.

Thank you for this. I've contacted a couple people regarding purchasing frizzle polish hatching eggs and I've asked if I can just get just frizzle but both people I talked to said no, it was a 50/50 chance, but they never explained why. I totally understand now. And yes, I'm sure that's what happened to my neighbors rooster. He thinks he's been molting for a year now! Ha! I'm so glad to understand this. That poor guy is one of the sweetest roosters I've observed too. Gentle with the ladies, baby sits the chicks and is an all around sweetie. I feel bad for him now but happy to know what his deal is.

I have read about this!! In the 1800's women used to keep hatching eggs in their bras or in their apron pockets, while working in the hot kitchens all day (and they would turn the egg every hour or so)!! I thought that was so interesting when I read it but hearing about you trying it, is like the icing on the cake! LOL!
That is too funny! I really hope it hatches! Do you have a brooder set up or will you put it back with mama?

Good news and bad news.

I was going to suggest keeping them next to the main flock with some kind of wire inbetween so they could see each other but I guess you have already been doing that. What about putting one of the higher ups in the pecking order, in with the younger ones? I'd have to research it because I'm not sure if that will work. Just a thought. I'm sorry you lost her. :hugs

Good for mama!! Post pics when you can! :)

That's really interesting! You had said once before, when I eggtopsied my eggs that had the amber liquid, that they could have been old eggs. Well all the eggs that had that liquid and died were the same color, black. Only one black chick hatched and it was the last to hatch. So that goes right along with what you're saying. I love getting all this info!!

So Sorry for your loss had the older ones killed it I put my pekin bantams in a coop outside earlier but brought them back into the brooder cause we had a thunder storm they are only 6wks so I,ll wait until they are a little bit older before I try again

I didn't see it die, but I assume it was killed by the older birds (11 are 10 months old, 11 are 3 years old, and the roo is 1.5 years old.) I have had my younger birds outside constantly since they turned 4 weeks old, thunderstorms have not killed any yet.
