Hey, I wasn't in remedial spelling, it was remedial speech.

I passed spelling very well thank you. (I had a great memory and studied before the spelling test, remembering long enough to pass the tests with flying colors...lol) Our language is messed up! We don't even follow our own language rules. You know how hard it is to teach reading and spelling? OMG, I discovered just why foreigners say English is the hardest languarge to conquer. Because we make no sense!

I have to be totally honest and say I have a problem using marans in the singular. I actually went and googled when I first joined the board to see if marans was proper with the s. It just doesn't sound right...lol
I always consider them min pinns, and acknowledge they are their own breed, but have always mentally thought of them as a miniture dobey in my head. Does that make me bad??? lol

I think I googled black copper marans to see what they looked like and just happened to read that marans was the proper term. So now when I see it used here, I think of reading that.

I'll forgive you on the MinPin thing... but I bet the next time you see one, you will remember its not a dobey lol

Hi Amy. New to chickens here in RI (yes we say lobstah) and I wanted to say thanks for all the helpful information, I googled because I have a HovaBator 2362, and came across these threads, my husband and I borrowed it from my moms friend and she gave us eggs (RIR's x Jersey Giants) well we had a faulty electrical outlet. It tripped on us overnight and we lost power, I was afraid we lost them all but it went out on day 10- we saw veining only, and now I see black masses in them. As another rookie mistake (this is our first hatch) my husband insisted we follow the instructions and add water to the bottom. I went off air cell sizes and decided a few days ago I was going to run dry until lockdown. The air cells have gotten bigger, they look like thu still have a lot of room in the shells. I should
of locked down last night, but I delayed a day and ran dry to increase air cells, I hope I did the right thing. At this point it will be a miracle if any of these hatch. I saw someone post eggs that looked like they had room and it looks like he still had them hatch. Any insight is appreciated, if anything I've learned a lot, and I read your post about these styrofoam bators- I just wish I had read it sooner. Here's a few pics from last night. What do you guys think?

Now, if you really want to get a beat down, buy some black copper marans on CL, then post pictures of them on the "Black Copper Marans Discussion Thread".

They are so much more than dark egg layers, and a lot of work is being done by some dedicated people to try and perfect this relatively new breed. I didn't know that at the time, and I just wanted to show pictures of my new chicks. I think the exact reply was "If it were me, I would eat them and start over". It was hard to hear, but I have learned a ton by lurking on that thread

Also I have to share, we got Orpingtons that carry the lavender gener we were told. This guy- or girl, falls asleep on my belly a lot. And no it's not normally this big, I'm having twins (I apparenty just like incubating things

Lavendar Orpingtons are gorgeous. I think WV has some. Amy can help you out with candling pics and styrofoam

Lurking because you don't dare post again? Eat them and start over is a pretty cute comment though! LOL Oh yes, there are many dedicated to their breeds, and will tell you bluntly what is wrong with yours. I try to be careful when I post pics, and admit that mine are not presumed to be SQ, they are pets. haha

So cute! Can't see much of your belly, but congratulations!

My LO's were never that yellow, but I believe I have seen some, as you said, that carry the gene. I hatched 10 and one of those is black, but it will still have lavender babies. The other 9 were very gray at hatch time. I just picked the breed because they were locally available to me, and I thought they were beautiful. I admit I need to learn more about them as a breed, but basically they are pets to me, so I just concentrate on them being a chicken in general.

Hi there!! They do look quite small. I would hatch out in cut down egg cartons so the eggs are standing up. This will give them a slightly better chance because if the chick can make it to pip in the air cell there's less chance of extra liquid from the egg running into the air cell and drowning the chick. Yes, I would have held back on lockdown as well. I would expect quite wet and possibly sticky chicks from the excess moisture/liquid in the shell. Hopefully they will all hatch out for you. You have to keep us posted.

I would feel more comfortable commenting on the candling pics if you could take some with the light coming through the large end, into the air cell...
