So dumb question, but you mean the air cell up or down in the carton?

I know I'm obsessing, I have serious OCD, but do they look like there's a chicken in there? They don't move, at least I don't think so. I tapped them and I don't really notice movement. Do you guys always notice movement?

You guys think I should lock down tonight? They are due to hatch Saturday night, but I can't help feeling based off candeling pics On here, that they look pretty far behind. If I keep dry another day, would that be bad?

Hi there!! They do look quite small. I would hatch out in cut down egg cartons so the eggs are standing up. This will give them a slightly better chance because if the chick can make it to pip in the air cell there's less chance of extra liquid from the egg running into the air cell and drowning the chick. Yes, I would have held back on lockdown as well. I would expect quite wet and possibly sticky chicks from the excess moisture/liquid in the shell. Hopefully they will all hatch out for you. You have to keep us posted.

I have to put "lockdown" on the calendar so I remember
I need to do that too...lol I just know it's three weeks. Couldn't tell you the date. I did tell my son's father he couldn't take him that Saturday, whichever Saturday it is...lol My last two hatches have started a day or two early, so I have to be sure...lol

Thanks guys! I will try that and candle some better pics tonight. Those are from the side so I know it's a bad angle for the air cell.

I do have some of the orpingtons that are grey as well. From what I understand if they only carry the lavender gene they will not be lavender? These are the grey babies, one of my daughters is holding.

Very pretty! Both the daughter and the chick!

I'll warn you, when they lose that pretty little fuzzy fur, and their big-girl feathers start growing in.... they are almost scary looking for a few days LOL But still adorable.

I took these last night. These guys are almost 4 weeks.

Also, this really is addicting. I'm already planning a new batch for mid- next week. I want some straight RIR's and I might buy a dozen black and splash Blue Laced Red-Wyondettes, and they also claim to have true black and splash Ameraucanas, maybe I'll do a half dozen of each. Why is it so hard to find straight RIR's in Rhode Island?!

I want the Tolbunt Polish. My husband says I need to learn to hatch eggs before I attempt an $85/dozen breed

Air cell up. That helps to keep in excess liquid in the egg down and not leaking into the air cell and possibile causeing them to drown. You'll want to cut the sides of the carton down a little and most people cut a hole out of the bottom of the individual cups for air circulation.

You can hold back another night if you don't have any pips. In your case I would candle the eggs first and make sure there are no internal pips before you go to bed, because you really don't want them pipping in the middle of the night to a dry incubator. If you have any internal pips I would go into lockdown.

You don't see a lot of movement at the end because there's not a lot of space for them to move and they are pretty much resting for the hatch, so as long as you still see some veining I wouldn't worry too much. Yet.

Tolbunts are beautiful. I agree with your husband. Get a few hatches under your belt to get your humidities and temps squared away, then buy the eggs
