Hi! Thread lurker here.

I have read it all and I think you're my type of crazy.

My question to red, blue and purple teams- which incubator did you start off with? Anyone go the homemade route the first time around?

Hi!, I'm purple. I love the "my type of crazy"!! Lol! I, personally, started with the Brinsea mini. (Absolutely, love it, especially after trying an LG..(sorry guys)..) But I think a lot of it depends on your lifestyle & preferences. If your handy you can definetly make one, like some have on this thread. If your home a lot you can monitor styrofoam incubators because in my experience they fluctuate a lot with temps. It also depends on the amount of eggs you want to set and how much $ you would be comfortable spending. If you see yourself hatching a lot, I would want to have something that was consistent & dependable. But I have seen people on BYC that have made incubators & hatched chicks their very first time.

On a more serious note:
I'm creeping up on two weeks this Sunday. So far my "oven" has been very gracious. The temps have been staying so steady, I keep having to check and make sure it's still an LG.

The cooler nights where it wants to stay around 99.0-99.3 I throw on the brooder light and I have it pointed toward the bator and it warms it up to hold it right about 99.5-100. Very pleased with temps. The bator is getting old and the lid apparently is wearing down where top meets bottom because if I don't keep something on it for weight the fan vibrates the whole thing and drives me crazy. Probably the eggs too. At first I thought the fan was loosening up, but no, it's nice and tight, just the wear on the lid.

I really haven't paid a whole lot of attention to the humidity. Going by the hygrometer and the range I figure it's off, it's staying in the 25-35% range. Air cells are looking good to me so far, so unless I see different at the 14 day full candle, we're still running dry.

Development looks good so far. Lots of movement. I am worried about those polish eggs though. I really think them being smaller may compromise their hatching. The development is great, I'd say, even advanced, (which may not be a good thing,) but I'm worried they wil be too big for the egg. If something happens with them I'll be sad, but I won't be surprised. I went against my better judgement incubating them, but I don't even listen to myself, so what do you expect? The silkie eggs are a bit of a worry too, just not as big as the Polish. I guess we'll find out in another week.

So overall, everything thus far is looking decent.

Welcome to the thread!! I have not done the DIY thing yet. I keep thinking about it as I have a real decent styro cooler that our vet gave me, but I'm too

. LOL I use an LG (9200) with the fan kit installed. It was the first incubator I hatched in and am still hatching in it. My last two hatches were 82% and 92% so I can't complain. Well, I can, but sc will just smack me and then I'll have to smack him back, and that's just tiring.....

Have you built a DIY incubator yet??

I'm the conservative one, and starting with an LG styrobator made me that way. I hated it so bad that I gave up for a while until I could afford a Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance. It really is a phenomenal machine, and easy to hatch in, but Amy gets similar results to mine in an old LG. That's why we started this thread, to show that no matter what you are using, and how you handle lockdown, you find what works for you and you go with it
