I saw someone that used hay as insulation....they packed it in tight between all the spaces of the pallets. I thought that was a great idea but then they updated their web page and said that the chickens had pulled all the hay out within a few months. So I was thinking maybe using the hay as insulation and then stapling over it a thick type of plastic wrap or maybe a type of tarp. I don't know, just thinking. Thank you so much for posting them! I think they look great!!

This is something else you guys need to know about Amy. She is quite prolific in the morning, then homeschools and disappears until around 3, then she multiquotes everyone that posted while she was away. Then she pops back on for a few jabs at me around 3, then disappears again to sing Barry Manilow to the kid while he's in the tub. Then there is another flurry of activity after he nods off.
My wife is all for the second incubator, but we have a rule. All chicken sale money goes into a bowl. All feed, supplies, etc.. are paid for with money from that bowl. When there is enough money left in the bowl at the end of a month to buy another incubator, I will get one then. Come on, Polish!!!

You have money from selling chickens or eggs???. If my wife knew how much I spent on chicken stuff.......

Amy, I promise I've never ate any of my babies.. even the ones that probably deserved it. I bought 20 Silkie chicks a couple years ago and got 18 roos ..I took months finding them homes where they would be yard ornaments and not get eaten. But my girls still look like they'd cook real nice on the grill..

I wanted to buy 30-40 cornish x to grow and process but there's no way I can process.. my lovely guy said he'd do the killing, but that still leaves everything else between that point and freezer ready that I'm not willing to do so until I have a girl (or guy) nearby willing, I'm sol

Thanks. It's really not that hard. I have zero artistic ability. My wife found some stuff on Pinterest and asked if I could build it. I said "No way, I can't do that!", and I was serious. I didn't think I could, but I have a shop full of tools and access to free lumber, so I just started cutting and hammering until I was able to figure something out. I tell you my secret weapon: Torx head screws. They drive so easy with a power drill and don't slip. Then I go back and tack small nails in to keep the rustic look

Welcome to the thread. I sell eggs, chicks, and started pullets, and all sales combined will almost allow me to break even. I don't make any profit at all, but I have paid for all supplies since January with money from sales

Good point. I should have also said that this is the first time in 7 years that my flock was large enough, and I incubted enough, to have a lot of inventory to sell. All of my hatching eggs come from my own flocks

I'm going to have to learn how to freeze them. I have 10 unsold cuckoo marans roos that will probably find their way to the freezer in another month or two. Did you say shrink wrap? I have a vacuum sealer, but shrink wrap would be easier

Nadya's Poultry http://www.nadyaspoultry.com/ sells shrink bags, zip ties, and evacuation tubes.

You just tuck the bird in the bag neck first (I tuck the wings behind the back to prevent tears), insert the hollow tube into the cavity, zip tie snugly around the tube, and plunge into hot water (just like scalding). The instructions say submerge but I've found it more effective to dip to just behind the end of the drumstick, pull from the water, pull the tube, snug up the zip tie, and dip the other end to shrink the excess wrap. They look much more professional, no freezer burn, and very durable. I also have a vacuum sealer but I've found the shrink bags to be much nicer to deal with.

I also use inexpensive poly bags (freezer thickness) that I sell fresh birds in so that the buyer can easily repack as cut up before freezing if desired.
