She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Yikes!! Happy your safe! I've seen pics of you and you don't look old enough to have a son that lives on his own yet!!

Thanks. And thanks again! My son is almost 24 and I'll be 50 in .... yikes.... less than 3 weeks....

I'm used to it . we have lot's of eggs early spring hatching is a lot better . I've added another cooling fan and once again temps are under control but humidity is much harder to get down. next summer I hope to have a tighter hatching room built . SC had posted something about BCMs needing higher humidity .they seem to be the ones that are having the hardest time with a higher humidity during incubation. they seem to do better at 45% during incubation and 75% at hatching. I'm ok with most of my hatch rates since I'm hatching in whatever weather comes my way. Kinda wish I had kept some of the BCMs I hatched this spring .

Always seems to be something, huh?

I love BCMs. They are beautiful. What breeds are you hatching now? I'm having trouble getting my humidity down in my incubator too. I'm going to try adding silica. I'm hatching peafowl and I've been torn over what to do. A lot of the reading I have done says they like higher humidity too. I'm running 50% dry with all this rain we are having. But I think the air cells look too small. I'm not really sure as this is my first go at peas. But I keep thinking if they were outside under a broody wouldn't the humidity be even higher??

Can't wait to see those peas... And I've thought the same thing about humidity under a broody. Maybe they have an internal way to keep the humidity away from the eggs?

Ok so candled and the one that pipped is actually the youngest egg(egg 8) and is actually due today so right on time. egg 6 is still moving but hasn't moved any further into the air cell yet but has internall pipped it. Saw absolutely no movement now in upside down egg except a few air bubbles when I flip the egg over so believe it has perished but wasn't counting on it since it was topsy turvey anyway.

Even if you lose that last one, you're still having a great hatch!

So I woke up to blinking clocks this morning. My worst fear, the power went out while I was sleeping! I went to bed at 12am up at 7am. Called the power company to ask how long my power was out. The lady says "you want to know how long the power was out while you were sleeping?" So I explained about my eggs and incubator and she was super nice and helpful then. Put me on hold and found out that they didnt do any work to get it back on so it probably was a quick off and on deal. I'll know for sure tonight when I candle. Fingers crossed!! Really thinking about starting a little piggy bank for a generator. But can you set up a generator to automatically go on when your power goes out or do you have to turn it on yourself?

My 4th week with 19 in the brooder was the dirtiest of the lot...the volume increased enormously.

I'm not going back to find the post, but I read the one Friday where you talked some about all of your computer stuff. That's what I love about the internet. In my mind you sound like a chain smoking ornery old man out in the boonies, who falls apart trying to put the rails in a Brinsea.

. The whole time I'm messaging you, I'm thinking "Jeez, it's really not that difficult".
Little did I know you were one of the great computer minds of the 20th century

Here are a few pics I snapped while they were in a box and I was cleaning their brooder pen. The 5 darker/smaller ones I hatched out the lighter/larger are the blue swede I bought

Mutt duck is the cutest to me with it's pattern and I will be keeping it if possible. The others are all pure rouen. Glad their eggs are fairly easy to tell apart.
As for the last 3 eggs all still have movement. One that was due today has internally pipped, the other due today is the upside down one and has moved even further into the small end but still has movement. One due tomorrow looks good prolly just a little late since they got an upping of humidity and a few cool offs more.

Those baby ducks are so cute!
I'll have to catch up later, but I just got home from being gone for the weekend and my poor little cripple chick is worse. Leg laying straight out behind her, she tries to crawl on her belly some, but its just pitiful. I'm so torn because I feel like putting her down would be the most humane thing to do at this point, but I also hate to give up on her. I'm a mess....
I hate to hear that about your chick. I'm not going to say what I would do, but you know what I would do...

I have a spradel leg (I think) on one of my chicks. Does this repair look ok?

That splint looks great, and that was an awesome hatch of shipped eggs in the Frankenbator. You promised us pics if the hatch was successful, so...

That sounds like a really successful hatch! Congrats, they're all adorable(even ugly lol).

I am looking for a no fuss bator for about 100 bucks(give or take a few dimes). I think we have settled on the hovabator something thousand and something. Does that sound like a smart move?
Everything I have read says the Hovabator is going to be the best bang for the buck in that category

I think I actually said lower humidity. I have no personal experience, but I have read a lot of threads debating humidity on BCM. The lower humidity makes more sense to me because of the extra pigmentation layer on the shell. Seems like that would make it harder for the eggs to lose moisture

If you want to spend enough money you can. I have seriously debated buying one of the large automatic ones, but you are looking at a few thousand dollars

I've been meaning to buy one of those plug-in power-outage alarms... something like this... $20 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Reliance-Controls-PowerOut-Power-Failure-Alarm-and-LED/15764587
If you are just sleeping, it should wake you up and you can plug in the generator! I know that doesn't help if you are away from home, but for overnights, it could help.
