She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I spent my whole winter building roofs over 50% of my pens, just for the shade. Summers can be miserable here, and this one is the hottest in years, so the timing was perfect. My hens have been panting some, but overall look much more comfortable than last year, even on the worst days.
The Polish were just a business decision. They were costing me more than I was making from them, and although they were beautiful birds, they were quite flighty, and that was the only pen I had that all chickens didn't come running to me when I walked in. The young man that got them (13 years old) bought them with money he had saved from selling his own eggs, and is planning on breeding them to show. I sold them to him cheap, because I was proud for him to have them, and I replaced them with a fantastic group of BBS Ameraucanas, so it worked out for both of us

That is so nice to give the lad a chance. I like young people who save up for things, I think they appreciate the things they buy much more that way. I hope it all works out well for him and you get on better with the BBS Ameraucanas. I've always made my son save and pay for all the extra things he wants. He appreciates money too which I think is a good thing although he does go a little far. He's 13 and I was winding him up about its time he got a girlfriend and his answer was they cost too much money!! :gig

I have covers on my runs, just got the second one up and done and it came with a cover (grey one). First run did not so I used a tarpaulin. After seeing how good the grey one is I've ordered one for the other run. Tied with elastic and it does not flap in the wind like the tarpaulin does. Plus then with my OCD they will match.

And another missing quote (what's up with those?)

@RubyNala97
-- love the new avatar pic!  You are beautiful and your kids are just adorable!!

Thank you! My one son was getting jealous and complaining that my picture was of his brother holding the neighbors duck and not of him, so I had to find one that had them both. But we have another addition to the family but he's to little to get jealous yet!

I thought about you yesterday because my neighbors call duck hatched out 3 baby call ducks. I got to hold them! They are soooo tiny!! A quarter of the size of regular baby ducks. I was so in love, so call duck hatching eggs are in the near future for me!! (The mother duck also hatched some gold pheasant eggs but my neighbor put them in the brooder with the ducks and they got too wet and died).

He was a good kid. His parents drove him up and he showed me pictures where he had won awards showing buff orpingtons. He even had a Grand Champion. I was proud for him to have them

I was reading about keeping chickens during the summer just the other day. And I read they can get overheated easy and won't seek water. So you should keep a bucket of cool water near the pen and if you see that a chicken is getting extremely over heated, you dunk them up to their neck in the bucket and it brings their body temp back down. And I think it was Amy that said she makes ice blocks with veggies frozen in them for the chickens. I like that idea. :)

I will give that a Whirl, thanks. I had the hose pipe running for them yesterday so they could walk through it and splash in the puddles. They quite enjoyed it too. Will keep a bucket handy!!

Haha, kids! That's funny. And I reallllly want some call ducks too. If, and that's a big IF, I ever move my current ducks away, I will have to get some call ducks. Call ducks go perfectly with bantam chicks, right??

(oh, that sucks about the pheasants though...)

At last!! It's uploaded it. Need to put a new update on the iPad but I'm wary after the rubbish ones from before. Anyone else had an Apple update come through? Does it work ok?

I wish they sold incubators for use in areas with average daytime temps of 115f and nighttime temps of 75f . One of my sister had some eggs hatch that were sitting in a hidden nest that didn't have s broody on it 2 years ago.

Thats crazy!

I just wanted to update real quick. The charcoal/carbon moisture control stuff I picked up at the dollar store took my inside incubator humidity from 55% to 25%! I am so pleased. I only used a small cup of the stuff. Probably over a dozen cups in the actual container. Loving that it only cost $1 and worked amazing!
Good to know something works. I'm in the high desert so I'm sure I won't need it, but it's good to know there is something that does.

Nah, c'mon, I'm seeing dollar signs!

I'm excited about your new incubator. I have been looking on the free classifieds for a broken fridge to replace Frankenbator.

It's been in the mid to upper 90s for three weeks down here. 70% humidity. I would die without central air. Our condenser went out Tuesday, and I paid extra for the after hours service. I'm not posh, but I'm a big ol' boy. I can't sleep hot
We are between 100 to 104 this week. All week. A lot of panting going on with the girls. They are due to start laying in two weeks. I hope this doesn't effect them negatively.

So, the next couple of days I should be busy getting everything done and ready to get away for a couple days. It's been two years since I last took a little vaca and got away from the house and my caretaker responsibilities. I love my dad and wouldn't want it any other way, but I really need this. When I got out of college I moved a couple hours away, down by my sister and lived there for 12 years before my mom died and I moved back to take care of my dad, so I have a whole life down there I miss too and my Bestest best friend is down there. So, excited to get away for the weekend and just hoping my van doesn't strand me anywhere between here and there. My other sister will be coming up to take care of our dad and my chickens. I just need to get motivated and get everything done....lol
Have a great time and be safe!

Roos will get the knock on the head if they have not gone after 2 weeks of advertising.
How old will these roos be when they get the "knock on the head" and what do you do with them. I know Grant Brererton (breeder and poultry writer) would give some roos to someone that raised Ferrets. Not a bad idea. I'm raising mine for the stew pot if I don't sell them.

It's amazing but I could not find one retailer in Canada who sells such a kit...so I have ordered it from Nasco and am waiting for them to call and tell me the shipping costs. I did find the retractor from a Canadian seller, and have ordered it also. My roos are approaching 7 weeks old so I will try on them...

Thanks Ruby, I hadn't seen that thread. There are quite a lot of youtubes also.
I think caponizing is illegal in Canada. You might check. I'm not saying not to do it because I still would, but it's illegal in the UK I believe and I wonder about Canada.

Sweet new digs! Are the boxes for dust bathing or are they for composting/kitchen scraps? Great looking setup.

Please try again, when you can, to post the pics of the runs. I'm planning to build a run this weekend and am brainstorming ideas!
