You are turning the eggs during the day right? If you are hand turning they will appear to be growing on one side when you candle. (Whatever side is facing up before you picked them up.) Once you turn the eggs everything will shift and the embryo will surface back up to the side that is up until they are bigger. As long as they are being turned, they should not actually "stick" to one side. If the eggs are being touched throughout the day by children w/unwashed hands you have a greater chance of bacteria getting in the pores of the shell and causing the embryos to die. Personally, I would only be allowing handling by adults or at least washed hands. The more they are handled the higher the probablitity that something may happen.

Air cells will grow at different rates on different eggs for different reasons but one of the biggest is shell quality and porousity of the shell. A more porous egg will loose moisture faster causeing the air cell to grow more. Always control humidity according to the majority of the eggs and not the minority.

See, I LOVE this thread! I learn so much just hanging here.
That is a fine list right there

I just bought my first jigsaw a few months ago and love it. My most recent addition was a table saw. That is so much easier than a skill saw, especially when working with longer cuts. I bought a metal cutting blade, and it does a great job on corrugated metal, too.
Does anyone else use Torx screws? I started that this year, and will never use Phillips again if I don't have to. No stripping, and you can really sink the screws

Well, skarewww y'all(pun intended). I just started wanting a new tablesaw the other day, didn't even know what a chop saw was. Now I must have one of those, a pneumatic nail thingy, along with a bunch of torx screws, just for fun. :p

I would have

ed anyone else that said it, but we're running low on guys so I let it go.

Seems we have lost that spontaneous, tolerant tone that we once had on this thread. I am very sad to see it go. The random swirls of topic with everyone's life is amazingly refreshing.

We can get it back!
Don't let it die!!

You guys/gals are a hoot. Did I mention I started reading this thread and made it to post 1100 and something and said forget it, I want in. I might slowly read through while trying to keep up with the chatter.

DH has lots of power tools. He's just protective of them. And messy. And he doesn't like to share. He did get my mobile run finished yesterday and I had the chickens out earlier. We have also been free ranging them under supervision. Sooo a little help? I really really want Olive eggers. We have 2 of each auracana, barred rock, silver laced Wyandotte and golden laced Wyandotte from rural king which we got May 1st. I just ordered 2 of each Easter eggers, blue laced red Wyandotte, black copper marans and
Welsummer. I'm thinking we need a rooster or 2. What would you recommend?

I like my screen name and use it on other social media. Friday is fine for me, but if you use my real name it's OK. Not like it's hidden, anyways.

This picture looks like an animated Pixar version of a real chick! Love that picture!

This is Jack. He's not too bright and his neck is a Little short, but he's a sweetheart. Too much white right now, but he's only 3 months so give him time. Nice yellow legs, good brow, Kind of molting so his topline looks funny.

Now you know Jack

Ooooh! A Russian Orlof! Pretty!

Was the Cock the white colored chicken? It could be double barred maybe. Just digging into some genetics stuff.

Sex-linked dilution BSd Females that are hemizygous for BSd (having one BSd gene) have light blue and barred plumage as do the heterozygous males, however, homozygous males show a dosage effect and are essentially white. These homozygous males resemble dominant whites but differ in that they are epistatic to pheomelanin while dominant white is not.

The way I read that the rooster could have two copies of barring and look white. But then all of the pullets he sires should have one copy of barring.

Edited to add this:
Pattern gene Pg
Dominant. This is the pattern gene which, together with other genes is responsible for the patterns of plumage. The pattern gene doesn’t seem to express in the absence of Ml in combination with some of the E locus alleles. See text. The pattern gene with the Db and Co Columbian-like restrictors is believed to be responsible for autosomal barring.

Since one of the parents seem to have the columbian gene. So you could have the pattern gene Pg, Db and Co and that would lead to barring regardless of sex.

And one more:
Autosomal barring Ab Non-sex-linked barring. Sometimes called 'parallel pencilling'. This is not a real gene, rather autosomal barring is due to combinations of Pg, Co, Db with eb, ER, and ebc. See text.

Looks to me like Co with Pg and Db since one of the parents is is columbian pattern. Sorry, just rambling.

I'd love to take a class on this. It's all very confusing to me.

That's a good question. I have been wondering this, myself. We have had a BCM roo, a few Australorps, and a few Welsummers. Of those, I enjoyed the BCM the best. The Welsummers were a little noisy for my taste and seem to get too involved in what they are doing and forget to watch out for their girls, BUT I prefer them to the BA's b/c the BA's we had were just too Aggressive with the hens(though that could just be the lines and not breed specific). They were downright mean to them, pecking their heads as they walked by and chasing them down to throw them around. We ended up keeping the wellie in with the girls, b/c he was way more gentle with them and they were better for it.
The BCM got taken out by our neighbors pitbull which, for some reason, they didn't feel the need to keep pinned up and just let it run free. Beautiful dog. Would have been a beautifully dead dog if I could have gotten out there in time with my rifle, but he was too fast.
