I'll be around, but I won't be awake at 7am if I'm lucky...lol Yes, I'll be in and out tomorrow as it's my grocery shopping day and will help as much as I can.

And there's a monkey Island in the southern part of the state. Same reason. no joke. They used to do experiments there, and now monkeys live on the island. Near Beaufort. Sometimes you can see them from the boat

That's bananas!

"The monkeys on Morgan Island have now swelled to a population over 4,000, and while no testing is done on the island, several hundred are captured each year and transported to labs around the United States for testing for diseases and, in more recent years, bioterrorism. The island was privately-owned and officially a secret until it was purchased by the state in 2002, and is now supported by the National Institutes of Health with a much more open profile.
The rhesus monkeys are native to India, but seem to have adapted well to the Deep South and are quite protective of their small territory. Visitors are strictly prohibited from the island, which is ringed with NO TRESPASSING signs, and those who venture near by boat often see the monkeys swarming the beaches to protect their shore. "

Good, Awful, Both.

The first one had gotten to the point where he was having a hard time eating and couldn't pick up food. I felt OK about it due to his quality of life. so I did him first.

Spoiler stuff
I'm really glad it's over with and they will be enchiladas next week.

See, that's what I'm afraid of(the spoiler stuff, not enchiladas. Enchiladas are quite delicious)!

Walnut, it's been 12 hrs since first wrong side pip. This is the hole I made in the air cell for him:

But as I was making the hole a piece of shell fell off from his original pip, making this:

I moistened it and put him back in the incubator. Now what???

We just got home and I am a whole pile of posts behind. The membrane looks a bit dry. You can't see his beak? Is he making any sounds? Can you hear him breathe or peep if you tap?

He pipped in a strange place, should have been at the dip in the air cell, so he wasn't optimally positioned. Try using tweezers to tear the outer membrane only from the expanded pip hole.

I learned a lot today, about things I will do differently next time. I'll definitely be better prepared.

All and all it was probably as traumatic for me as it was for them - since I can remember it. But I don't feel bad because it felt like the right thing to do.

(DH loves enchiladas too - Especially with Hatch green chiles.....mmmmmmm.)

Adorable variety of fuzzies!

Dawwwww. ^.^

See, I have no tolerance for this type of behavior. I used to think it was normal until I witnessed my Welsummer(Fah Q) covering the girls. He was so gentle and they were so willing. I can't wait to see what comes of their chicks. All of our hens are Australorps, I have seen some pretty crosses from those genes. Today our LG decided to suddenly shoot up to 108 and then flipped the breaker on the outlet.

I'm never going to be able to regulate that temperature. Fixing to give up and get a hovabator. Amy keeps me going. lol

Those new LG 9300s are scary. I didn't think anything could be worse than a 9200 until those came out. I bow to Amy, queen of LG hatching.

I definitely do not have the patience for that level of egg-watching.
Yup, I wield a mean scalpel...

Thanks to Walnut.

Nicely done! I hope they taste as good as they look.

Good, Awful, Both.
At least you were the one wielding the scalpel. You know those birds would eat you if given a chance.

show off like I said if it wasn't for four little things I've come to believe that you wear a blue suit and red cape with a big gold S on the front

"If it wasn't for four little things"? Now that is a cliffhanger.

Save your next bleach jug and make a killing cone. Screw it to a 2x4 and screw or clamp that to something bigger. That leaves you with two free hands. You can have the garbage bag in a bucket below and just pull up around the cone after the cut.

We've planned a 700 mile trip on our baby dual sports this weekend, and had to finish breaking them in. So we packed up cooler, bedding, clothes bag, tent...most of the stuff we will be taking camping...and took a 75 mile test drive over to Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River. Beautiful scenery and nice twisty two lanes along the lake and river.

Have you ever heard of mayflies? They are about an inch and a half long, 3" wingspan, juicy and soft, and come out at night They die and fall to the ground and are greasy and slick. They smell like dead seaweed. They swarm by the millions and each lives only one night in a breeding frenzy. We drove through a five mile swarm of them. They came up under my chin inside my face mask, obliterated my headlight, and completely covered my shield. We had to pull into a gas station where I took the helmets in the bathroom to wash the shields. My leather is covered with them, DH's mesh jacket has them embedded in the mesh. The vents on the helmets were clogged with them. We live about 25 miles from the shore so we get one or two at our house. I forgot how bad they were by the water.

The GQF is getting cleaner and I think I found where the broken wire is supposed to go. I'll fix that tomorrow and order the heating element. Once I have it electrically safe and cleaned out, I'll test it and see what needs replacement (someone unscrewed the timer motor from the bracket so it may be bad). Once it works, I'll set the thermostats and give it a run test. Even though it has an electronic thermostat I'll probably upgrade it to the Sportsman type, and add a clear door and a deeper hatching tray. This hatching tray looks good for quail and that's about it. And I'll probably need to order more extra large egg trays. By the time I'm done with all that it won't be a cheap incubator any longer, but it should work well.
