I was thinking a lot about this thread and you & Amy when I was trying to go back to bed! I was really thinking I should have let him perish in the shell. I'm beyond shocked at his quick recovery. I'm giving them to my neighbor at the end of the summer. So they will be close. I'm wondering if he will make it and if so, if he'll have problems as an adult. It's good experience to have!

True story... 4 of mine are silkies. They are the first ones in the coop and up on the roost...lol This is going to be a Miami Dolphins cake....lol I have to share the last two cakes I made for my son's bday: Last years I had to clean up some lines after taking the pic...lol but the Hulk hand is the modling chocolate. The 6th bday cake I just loved, one of the favs that I did. He pics his own cake and I try to wing it...lol [COLOR=B42000] [/COLOR] I have more pics here if anyone is inerested. You guys have to hear this! I got up at 4:30am to check on the pea chicks. The one I assisted was laying down flat, wing floppy & flipped back, head shaking and beak open. I thought he was basically dying. He was warm but lifeless in my hands. So I petted him and talked calmly to him. I kept dipping the tip of his beak in water with save-a-chick in it. Then I'd point his head back so he could swallow. I did this for about 15 mins. He couldn't sit or stand. So I just laid him back down. I went to go back to sleep for a couple hours. Thinking I'd have to bury him or worse put him down myself, in the morning. I questioned if I should have even got him out of the shell. But I realized since he was chirping in the shell he needed a chance. Well I woke up 2 hours later and he was standing, walking and drinking on his own! I couldn't believe my eyes! I showed him where the starter was and was poking at it with my finger and he started eating too! He's the biggest of the 3 and I can't believe the 180 in only 2 hours. He's even picking on his siblings! Wow-it's been a miracle!! Also I went to shut down the incubator. I had 2 eggs in there that I was 99.9% sure died before lockdown but kept them in the extra bator just incase of that .1%. Well I candled them and one is dead but one is moving!! The air cell is just drawing down now. It looks to be 2 days behind, developmentally, then the others. Is that possible if they were all set together? Ok, sorry about the novel! I'll stop rambling now!

That is great!!! It can happen. My last hatch my first hatched day 19 my last day 21. It could have been in a cool spot, or just a slow developer. Hope that one makes it for you as well!! I always believe in giving them a chance. While I totally understand SC's philosophy, I could not NOT help a chick (of any kind). I have only lost one chick that I assisted start to finish, and that was my second hatch. He had digestive problems I think and only made it a a little over a week. He had bad diarrhea, but was very active, just not growing, then a couple days before he died he got bad. My best layer in the coop atm was my first malepositioned chick I assisted. Perfectly healthy. I think a lot depends on the why it needs assisting. If they are three days or four late and needs assisting, I can understand following sc's philosophy, cause the chance of it not having problems is sooo high. An on time malepositioned pipper, or a zipper stuck zipping, I can't see not helping. That's the joy of the thread and BYC, to see how other's think, feel and act.

The first one I did was for a friend, but it was Spiderman, Batman and Superman, and my son decided he wanted one but with Spidey Cpt America and Iron Man....lol Mommy wanted the Hulk fist...lol And thanks.

My first few hatches, I assisted 5 or 6. Had to cull all but two before they were 5 days old. All were late hatchers. Culling a cute, fluffy chick is tough, and is just not something I want to do again. Since buying the Brinsea, I have not had to cull any, but I also have a drop dead shutdown of day 23. I see Amy's side, too, and your experience is a perfect example of success, but I have had far more heartbreak than success. I felt bad for WV on her last chick. Early on, when she said it was dragging it's leg, I knew what was coming. I know you want to give them every chance you can, but you end up getting so attached to the one you are trying to save that it's even worse when you have to put it down. That's why I don't assist, but you assisted and it worked.
