She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

First I use those colored loom bands that are used to make kids bracelets (like a baby hair rubber band)... I double it over to keep it from coming off the day olds leg... once it gets close to snug I unloop it for a bit more, then switch to using small colored zip ties... just have to check them each day to make sure they don't become tight on the leg...

I have plenty of zip ties. I will look for the other bands for the tiny legs.

You guys are so lucky to have eggs! Starting up a flock from eggs is hard & long! I should get my first egg in another month or two unless it gets too cold. Then I'll have to wait till spring. Chickens might not lay in the cold, right?

I know how you feel, most of mine were from eggs, and 90% of those were shipped, lol...
Cold doesn't affect laying, length of day does... they need *I think* at least 14hrs of daylight for it to trigger laying... on average at least... and some 1st year pullets will lay all the way through winter...

Walmart carries them, in the arts and crafts area...

My girls slow down during the cooler months but they don't stop laying.

My whole flock, minus the three troublesome silkies I took of my sister's, I hatched myself. By next spring I should be all set for eggs...lol It's only taken a year lol.

Yes, it is common for chickens to decrease laying or stop all together during periods of shorter daylight. Some will keep laying while others stop. Some people add light to their coops to increase laying, but there is a lot of opinions on that as well. Many feel the that messing with the nature of the bird's cycle is not good for them.

Whatever works best to remember, lol... I don't tag for different breeds anymore since I can tell them apart at hatch, but I tag for different breeding lines... my Marans are tagged green and red right now, green for a line from Portland, TN (cuz I always think Portland/Oregon/Green) and red is just a different and easily visible color so that is my other line...
Color keys are something each person needs to decide themselves so it is easier for you to remember depending on what works for you... :D

Just ordered some cheap from amazon. I use amazon for most things, including dog food so I don't have to carry it. I have prime so have free shipping.

Well, after going through these pics(down to 104 now), I don't think I am so confused anymore on the feather sexing thing. If it works, most of them are pretty obvious.

I am just in LOVE with these wyandottes!
