Although I think skunks are cute, let me tell you, I had 1 spray underneath my house 1 time cause my dog came after him and omg it was BAD! My house reeked of skunk for a long time after that. All the clean linens and towels and such had to be rewashed, every stitch of clean clothing had to be rewashed, 4 dressers full. I'll have you know I was less than happy. It was like a green fog settled all over everything in the house and just stuck to EVERYTHING. I sent my kids to school the next day and their teachers called me an hour later saying I had to come get them cause the smell was nauseating everyone. The smell was so strong inside that when we left we didn't notice that we still stunk, lol and I never really thought about it. My poor kids. They were in elementary school at the time but that's embarrassing for a child at any age.

Yep. My chickies are 4 weeks old now, and I'm just now getting to the point when I'm pretty sure of the gender. I think they both have straight combs. True to cockrel PITA fashion, one of them bit me yesterday morning when I picked up his broody Mama. He bit me again when I herded all the chicks into the cat crate to transport them to the tractor! Little twerp!!!

I've decided I don't need a Jr. shot gun. I can do ok with the 20' long one.

Day 14 update. 32 eggs set. 6 were clear, 2 have quit. So 24 still looking great! (13 golden sebrights, 1 silver sebright, 6 BTBJ, 4 SD OEGB)

I also realized that one of the clears, and one of the quitters were 2 eggs that she pulled while I was there picking up the eggs, so they were laid the day I set them.

I weighed a few too (I wish I'd quit doing that!) and the weight loss is a bit high, but the air cells look fine, so I'm not touching anything yet. But maybe if these don't do well, next time I will increase the humidity a bit, if the weight loss is that high.

Yeah, do the "build a better bator" on Kickstarter. Reverse engineer my Brinsea Polyhatch for ideas. Really, though, just use a cleanable rigid material with enough mass and a proportional thermostat and that's most of the battle. I was watching YouTube videos of this old Italian man, with broken English, that is a pro at hatching quail eggs. He uses the poly-hatch. I keep coming across stuff that makes me think "walnut". Lol

sorry guys totally out of the loop right now just had a really hard weekend. did however finish one job over done no going back . last night worst of all got in after dark and went to feed my horses . my favorite one was down rolling on the ground colic , really bad tried to save him but couldn't. did all I could but there was no hope .Its kinda like I've lost my kid . right now really depressed about that but I'll feel better after I get some sleep haven't had much in the past three days . love this thread though don't know what I skimmed on that made laugh . but It did and I needed a laugh even a small one. Wife made me feel a little better about my horse though .she said she was happy he looked so good for his age . he was 29 years old I raised him from a baby there when he was born first foal on the farm .so without even trying to read more I'm turning in early tonight . finish trailer story sometime tomorrow .

to you too. My parents' horses are getting old, they just had an Arabian pass away in his sleep who was 39, and had to put down a mare in her late 30s. They have only two left, both in their 20s, the horses are growing old with them. When we were visiting them in July, one of their horses cast himself in a run-in shed trying to roll in the soft dust, and my husband and I used a tow strap around the chest and a lot of pulling to get him turned around where he could get up. A horse can go from fine to gone much too fast. I know the bond with a horse, I had a beautiful Appaloosa that I bought at 15 as a stud colt, and raised him until I went to West Point. My parents sold him and he became a police horse, I planned to buy him when he retired, but the sheriff's department "forgot" and sold him off. I never saw him again and I know he isn't around anymore, but I will never forget my horse. At my graduation party Watching him in a parade I got to ride him while he was in uniform.

My grandfather used to run a trap line and sell the pelts when my dad was a kid. The exact set up might not work for you, but there can be variations to it I think. To trap and kill a skunk without getting sprayed, take a foot trap, tie it really tight to the longest pole you can find (my grandpas was around 10 feet long) and place it where the skunk is coming. Make sure any pets won't get trapped. When my grandpa had the skunk in the foot trap, he grabbed the other end of the pole and led the skunk to a spot where the little creek by the house was backed up. If the skunk started to raise his tail or act alarmed, he stopped and let it calm back down. When he got to the stream, he submerged the skunk to drowned it. When it's dead, you can then dispose of the body. My neighbor tried this once, but was going to shoot the skunk in the head with a 22 and I was supposed to run in with a big fishing net, scoop it up and dump it into a barrel of water, hopefully before it sprayed...her gun jammed. And the 12 gauge she went with definitely made the skunk spray... I think it could be done with a box trap as well. A neighbor in a different house had a skunk trapped in a box trap and animal control officer just had the foam boards covering the box trap and had a way to euthanize the skunk with a shot without it spraying.

Anyway to do that in a have-a-heart trap? I'm not at the point of killing anything yet. I may get there, especially if something kills my babies. But I'm not there yet.

You watch a varmint tear the breast off one of your chickens, and you'll be more than willing to kill by any means possible. With bare hands if necessary. I knew an old fella (96 y.o.) who said he caught critters in a live trap, then put a tarp over it, and fed his exhaust from his car under the tarp for about 10 minutes (used a vac hose). Other folks have been known to drop the trap in a rain barrel.

I caught one in a HavAHart. I didn't do it myself, but was told I could just approach the trap slowly & put a blanket over it; sorta like covering a bird cage at night, I guess. Then, you can transport with no problem.

That's what I was TOLD! I took the sure route, with a scoped .22 from a ways off.
