She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

So quick question on my first hatching. The first chick to hatch keeps walking around (stumbling) into all the other eggs and moving them. Is this okay or do I need to move it to thr broading box?
It's a favorite hatchling sport: Chicklet soccer. My first hatch, one of them was not progressing b/c her sibs kept bowling her from one end of the bator to the other. So, I put her in a rubbermaid dish, and she was out in 10 minutes. Generally, it's not an issue.

We don't get any kids either, we have a mile drive through the woods, an gate that needs a code, cameras, and 2 gsd's. I love it too. I don't even buy candy!

We keep our lights out, and generally plan to be away from home that night. Often, some friends have a bonfire, and we go there. Buy a few candybars just in case neighbor kids show up. Then, my diabetic hubby gets to eat them. (the candy bars)

So noon today started day 28 and nothing. Should I give them till Sunday before pitching these duds?
What kind of eggs? Chicken? Pitch them carefully so they don't explode. Duck? or Guinea? Wait a few more days.

Sounds like you're out where the sunshine truck comes thru about once a week...must be nice!
Sunshine truck? What's that?

This morning, I was greeted by 2 huge Tom turkeys in the back yard.

So I HAVE to share a pic that has nothing to do with chickens. My son has gotten into Godzilla and King Kong and all that and decided he wanted to be Godzilla for Halloween this year. I let him pick his costume and we ordered it Tuesday. It got here today so we had to try it on and check it out and make sure everything worked. So funny watching him walk around in it. I love it. Now he can't wait until Halloween.

This is just too cool!!!

I bred bird dogs for the better part of 40 yrs.; fed a lot of dogs that I knew were not good enough 'cause I couldn't put one down.
I love breeding Springers! what breed? I cant sell my older girls yet alone put one down :( I cannot be called breeder lol

Interesting stuff. When you get a minute I have a question regarding weighing vs monitoring air cells. I monitor air cells in order to know how to adjust my humidity and have awesome results with my hatches (all local eggs-no shipped). I have never weighed and have no intrest in weighing. However, we have had a couple people on here try to weigh and monitor air cells for the same incubation only to find that their air cells had good, progression and were where they "needed" to be (according to the egg graphs/pictorials) but the weighing would reveal either not enough weight loss or too much. Do you consider weighing a more adequate measure of monitoring? I've seen a couple articles (outside of BYC) that dissed the air cell monitoring as not being an accurate source of moisture loss monitoring. Personally, I find it the easiest method and for me it works great so I'm not about to change, but I thought your thoughts might help others that are weighing and finding discrepancies with weight vs what they are seeing with air cells.
I dont weigh anything, if I had known to weigh and use local fresh eggs at first hatch I would have saved myself a lot of grief!
But there is why I started the Hatching 101, I was darned if I wouldnt try figure everything out about incubation to get good hatches and then I had to document everything or I would forget, I need everything written for reference, I am not a genius and the fact that I have an acquired white matter disease of my brain, makes my memory sporadic at times unless its something I have done over and over.

I rarely even candle, but I can answer that question. Tracking air cells is your perception of what you see compared to a chart that has been drawn. Weighing eggs is more "accurate" because you are using known numbers that can be measured to achieve an ideal percentage of weight loss. I can't give an opinion on which has better results, because I don't do either one

Will do! You too! Your ears must have been burning earlier. I was telling my SIL about your ordeal. She loves silkies, said she wants to do more in the spring. So I showed her Magnolias too, but didn't recommend she order them! Haha!

Where does she live? I can recommend some other breeders. The breeder I've gotten all of my flock from sells eggs. She's in GA and packs great! And she's on byc too!

I've seen pics of air cell on the side and the person said it hatched....so it's possible. Will you help if it needs help zipping or are you blue?? ;)

Did you candle? Candle and look to see if the air cell is drawing down. If it is then they may just need more time

Sally, I have 2 quick questions that drive me crazy. Re:shipped eggs-
1) I have the eggs in individual cut down cardboard cartons, is tilting them left to right a sufficient form of "turning"? Because I've read that laying them down and turning them from one side (X) to the other (O) is the best way to exercise the embryo. But that's not always good on shipped air cells.
2) do you recommend hatching them upright in the same cut down cartons? Do they fall over as they hatch?? And then knock the other eggs over?
I'm using two brinsea minis. This is my setup:

Sunshine truck: Another way of saying that someone lives so far out in the "boonies" that sunshine has to be piped or trucked in.

I treat the eggs normal and turn them on side if air cells are healed. If still jiggly carry on side turning gentle ;)

I never hatch upright because I have had chicks pip lower end and die because of that. Plus if you read in the hatching 101 article I wrote it explains the natural position for hatch in more detail. ;)
I know a lot of people hatch upright in cartons, I havent done it since I lost my 2nd chick and I did my research, makes no sense if you loose a chick, there is a reason the big hatcheries lay eggs down to hatch, its very cool to research the subject of incubation in detail, not hearsay but educational articles and abstracts that actually explain everything.

Well, in Northern NE, we need piped in sunshine a good part of the year. We go weeks at a time seeing very little sunshine. As a matter of fact, when a shadow gets cast, it's often time to stop, look at the sky, and just marvel. Definitely not a place for some one to live who's affected with SAD.

Woke up just in time! THIS NEVER GETS OLD no matter how many chicks you hatched!!

Teeny CurlySues! aka HarmonyAnns Serama....
Love her new tiny Roos, they are making such cute littles!
One problem with them is she is getting more straight than frizzle, they are so sweet looking!

ps... ignore the blue circles around the bottom, I had two sets of eggs in and I hand roll these tiny eggs. When its lockdown its quicker to see who is who and grab them out.
I marked air cells on day 16 because they hatch anywhere between day 19 & 20, as you can see the eggs are all different sizes and the bigger ones will hatch tonight into tomorrow.
Serama take some time to learn how to incubate.

Sally, I competed in pointing dog competitions (field trials). I started out with Irish Setters 'cause that was Dad's chosen breed. Several years later I switched to English Pointers.
