She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

They can't be that bad, can they? :barnie I thought I was the only one that saw it and I was just dying inside. I just got a newsletter from where I got my meat birds and they are now selling Silkie Broilers! Anyone heard of these? I'm just trying to imagine butchering day in front of the kids. I might as well dress Santa and the Easter Bunny while I'm at it.
That's just not right!!
Maybe, but I have been wary of getting too close to the "distributor" title. The pullets sell fast enough for me to lose a little on the cockerels. Fancy around here means you wear a jacket to the Cracker Barrel :gig Yes, I believe that should be Ruby's deal :D
Yeah, I've got a couple funny ideas!
Stopped at home before coming to check on my girls at camp, and guess what? The chick in the bator is still alive! The bator is turned off, but its still alive. Now I'm wondering if it might have hatched if I had just left it turned on. I'm blaming my hubby. :hit
Oh no! If it's a goner anyway just pull it out of the shell and see what the deal is. Is it possible the air from taking the top off is making it get glued inside and maybe it can't get out??

I know it doesn't help, but the last two I helped out late I had to cull later for leg issues. Wish I would have let them break out or not. I would give them time, but I won't help anymore unless my bator is running too dry or something.
My last 2 batches of BCM both hatched 11. Only 7 made it out of the first batch, 8 in the second. All perished between 3 and 5 days old. It makes you feel heartless when you have to do that. Dying in the shell isn't easy, either, but it's the lesser of the evils

It's tough, and the more you hatch the more it happens. I understand that you can't throw it in the woods, but the "trash can chicks" are exactly why I do. Once I decide an egg is gone, it is gone.
There's nothing you could have done. Some just aren't meant to hatch, and culling them when they are fluffy is much worse. At least you have so many strong, healthy ones that hatched :thumbsup

No, I read about at least 2 instances within the last couple of weeks where people have thrown away eggs, only to get in the trash can and find a living chick! Well, one was a duck.
And yes, I am thankful for the ones that hatched!

That's just not right!!

I have thought about that... But if it can't make it out on its own, it would be harder to cull once its out.

Wonderful parade, as usual, SC! I'm bouncing back and forth between sticking with just getting eggs to incubate when Frieda's broody and getting eggs now to test the incubator. I do know that I want local free eggs for a test (tempted by a swap, but I don't think shipped BCM eggs would be a great trial run :lau ) but everyone local that would be willing has flocks in midmolt... So it'll be a while before I can even wish for a parade.

I was going to say that figuring percemtages would be easy with 10 eggs, then I realized that the parade percentages are from lockdown, not set, so never mind...

(Also can't wait for the personality breakdowns ;) )

Thanks for reminding me, I forgot about the breakdowns. I will try to get them tomorrow.
My phone is blowing up for Silkies again. Must be the weather. One guy saw my Ameraucanas and said he wants 20 chicks in February :D
