She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Great idea! I'm doing this. Pheasant backs? Never heard of em! The only time we ever found an oyster shroom was at a state park. It was huge and perfect--and completely off limits. :D I've always wanted to get into Id-ing plants(and trees), but haven't yet. I've been into mushrooms since high school though. Don't even eat em, just love the hunt! Finally dried out here and it. is. gorgeous! We tried hunting ginseng last year, but never found any. As for poisonous mushrooms, the best thing to do is learn what the dangerous ones look like in the area you're hunting in and stay away from anything thats even close. If I ate our finds, I would never eat any little brown ones or anything from the Amanita family. Morels only have one look alike--the false mollymoocher. haha Cross sectioning is the easiest way to steer clear of those. Hunting mushies is great! Anything else I wouldn't know about. Looooooove TN! So much. x2 for WV. And I miss Pennsylvania. Nothing beats the dutch country at dawn. If I could move anywhere in the lower 48, it would be Wyoming. Me too! My fav so far is cauliflower, cabbage, carrots and kale. @OldMissionChick I'm going to try the green bean theeng next year; sounds good.
Polyporus Squamous -aka - Dryads Saddle, Pheasant Back or Hawks Wing. I find them toward the end of morels. They are easy to find and I dont think there are any look a likes. You want them kinda small, about the size of your hand.

Thats awesome, I never knew that about the stems! Thank you! At some point I would love to try to grow my own shrooms, because we are in the mnts and they grow terrific in our location. I researched one time about Morels and how they cant figure out how to actually grow them. But it would be cool to try other types!

Yw. I think oyster mushies are supposed to be easy to grow. If you're doing an outdoor wood lover, you just about can't get any easier! Just put some plugs in the right kind of decaying log, set it in the right area and wait(forever). lol We've thought about trying to make a few bucks off of it ourselves; that and beekeeping.
I finally made a bigger waterer for our 26 meaties! and I was surprised, with a dremel it only took me 15 minutes, and I procrastinated over a week to make one! DOH

They are really getting stinky I had to lime and then add more shavings... rain rain rain is driving me insane! I need it to dry out now please!!!

Rain is the worst when you have chickens. Soooo smelly. I can't even imagine meat birds. Is this your first time growing them? We are thinking about that, too. But the mess!

Also, I dont understand when I am looking at property in new york there are statements about mineral rights and all that? I looked at aerials of NY West and some of the mining I see from google earth scares me. I dont want to buy something and then someone can push me off for mining or something.
Crazy that kind of stuff can happen, isn't it? it's a crazy mixed-up world.

Some where warmer....lol I want green Christmases! I honestly am not sure. My dad was born and bred Jacksonville Fla and it's where all my paternal relatives are and all my sibs were born there, but I am not a fan of hurricanes and roaches...lol West is kind of tempting if you don't think of tornadoes. I would love to visit Texas and check that out. My sister lived in Virgina and I remember visiting her and enjoying that area as well.

I have no idea about mineral rights. The area I live in is known for the zinc and talc mines, but they haven't been open for quite some time now.

LOL I dont think anyone can be a fan of huricanes and roaches??? why so bad there?...... well there are a few that like those big roaches eeeeewwww

we have a tree the son took down and its been stacked uncovered next to a lil creek and its covered on the ends with some kind little shrooms starting, but it took two years for them. I will have to ask what type of tree it was, heck I dont remember!

Those are beautiful! They grow here, too. I'll post pics the day I find them.

Sally, sc lives in SC, ask him, lol...

As for TN, taxes aren't bad... no state income tax... and TN is now giving first 2 years of college free to high school grads...

Edited to add, oh yeah, the Sulmtaler roos name is Duke, lol... :D
