She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

y'all are right I worry too much over the smallest things. But the good news is all 9 that started to develope are still growing and alive and kicking so I'm hoping things will turn out good. Do y'all want to see some candling pics? I'm not promising anything cause my phone uploads pics when it sees fit so it might take me a while.

I always want candling pics. Now its going to be a long time before I get to candle again.... I feel the shakes starting already...
Glad to hear you have 9 doing well!

"taken" could be a loose term, too. I try to be very upfront with my birds, but say someone wanted eggs from my silkies and I sent them some. You guys have seen them. They are cute, but nowhere in the realm of SOP. If they got my birds, then posted pictures on a silkie breeding thread and said "Look what I got from scflock!", my reputation could be ruined in a heartbeat. Anyone that participates in the shipathon needs to understand that we are just friends swapping eggs, we aren't promising SQ. My chickens are spoiled, and live in great conditions, but Fabio ain't goin' to no shows ;)

I feel the same. Upfront and brutally honest.

I would like to participate in the ship a thon but I have nothing to give, I wouldn't feel right about taking if I had nothing to give. Our birds were purchased for eggs & 4H projects. All our chickens are hens so no fertilized eggs from them. We do have assorted ducks, both hens & drakes, but not separately penned so maybe if someone is interested in mutt ducks (lol) I have that to offer. But I haven't had a successful hatch ... yet.

I'll just have to be the cheerleader... I think my husband would divorce me if I set more so soon!

No divorces please!

Sweet, I am glad I posted in a busy thread, I think I'll be able to get to 20 posts in no time so I can (finally) use the BST threads LOL. My husband will rue the day he started getting "eggcited" LOL!
I have a feeling you will have way more than needed lol

Awesome, glad to have you hatching with us over there!
Ruby, I think you have a "buying" addiction, more than a "hatching" addiction...

Life story, huh? C'mon, all I said in Oz's thread was how I found it (not exactly relevent here) and stuff that I'd said here, just more spread out.

I am sorry I have not been on lately or as frequently. Life has been keeping me busy and well I was spending more time on here than with my kids and that's just not okay. So I have to limit myself to check only during down time or nap times. I miss chatting it up with you guys though. Lol! Sorry for blabbering on. Have. Wonderful day! @WVduckchick add my am to that list...and Ravyn and I are going to swap CCL eggs. I would like BCM eggs and a few duck eggs....not sure what else others have. I have the CCL and Silver Laced Polish and some backyard mixes.

Way to go mom!

Candling can be so much fun. Love it when I see the heart beat, or a foot. A couple of hatches back.

A silkie foot. All five toes had been showing, but by the time I got back with the camera and put the egg back up, it had moved, still got some toes though. Little tiny tots. Love em.

Cool pics! I could make out toes for the first time when I was locking down my last hatch. Couldn't get the camera out fast enough though.

I ordered the business cards. And hats. And a couple of hoodies...

What about the mousepad?

So. Serious question about hatching so late in the year...

Living in the NW we have either hardly any winter, or winters that start in Sept/Oct. And my husband wants to hatch some babies rather than purchasing because... "experience" or something. I guess it's kind of like having a baby, getting to see the baby grow inside or some such... Of course if we set eggs for the Halloween hatch a long or before, they won't be feathered out until around Dec, which means it sounds like they'll be living in the garage until the weather starts warming up, or would we be able to handle the temps by the time they're ready for the coop?  I am guessing it will all really depend on the weather.

I am wondering if my husband has thought that through far enough ahead lol...  He and I are now in the planning/purchasing phase for building the coop. But running electricity to the coop won't be done until spring probably.

You can actually brood chicks outside in winter. Here's a link that may be very helpful.

:fl Good luck!! I know they are going to hatch out good for you!!

A couple of years ago, I was intrigued with the Legbars. They were stupid expensive then. Did some reading and found that one with a few resources for breeding pens could create their own Legbar, or any other ---- bar in about 3 generations. Since then, due to hearing that they're a bit flighty, not to mention their big combs, I'm focusing on breeding my own "land race" flock that will do well in my climate. I'm focusing on small combs, colorful eggs, less flighty disposition. My last season of birds, in retrospect, all but one could be gender id'd at hatch based on leg color, comb color, and feather pattern. Interesting, b/c I have one breeding rooster, and about 6 different breeds in the mix.

Count me in for the ship-a-thin. I'm offering: 10# of persistent belly roll. Has stayed the course for the last 21 years. Frequently increases in vigor during the winter months. Impervious to short term attempts to rein it in.

I also wanted Legbars because of the egg color until I learned they were temperamentally more like the brown Leghorns I once had (spaz birds that would literally fly the coop when you opened the door, would go on the roof and not come down, etc). My "near Ameraucanas" were bad enough. Now I just want some easy to raise birds that can get along with birds of other colors and sizes and make nice egg baskets. They also have to be cold hardy, and a slight tendency to broodiness might not be a bad thing. But they have to be smart enough to get out of the way of a lawn tractor and even escape some of the lesser predators. There are few quality poultry breeders in the area, but a lot of breeders who buy/sell or breed low quality hatchery specimens of popular breeds. I won't try to compete with that. And there are a lot of sellers of cheap eggs, the Amish undersell everyone. So I will be out of the egg business.

If we move to the new place the birds will have room to roam. We will be looking at three properties tomorrow, all riverfront custom homes on 5-20 acres. Even with more land, I will have a smaller flock, I just want it to be self-sustaining and being able to grow my own broilers would be a plus. The coop will be a place to lay and roost and provide shelter in inclement weather. I'll have a brooder house and grow out pens for my turkeys.

And yeah, if someone figures out ship-a-thin, I'll take two, please.
