She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I just wasn't a football fan at all during the Hasselbeck era.

and then they sent him here . I used to be into our team. this weekend is why I'm not so much anymore. seven sacks where the @%ll was his line asleep

. oops forget this is about chickens .

Mine is 26 weeks, so I'm guessing she won't lay until next spring (if she doesn't become Thanksgiving dinner)? Also, do they mature slower without a tom around?

Hens don't care if the tom is there or not, when nature calls, they lay. Day length is part of it so she will probably start in spring when days start getting a little longer.

So I had left the nest box in the kennel in the coop with the two dud eggs in it to try to entice the others to lay in there and leave my broody alone. Yesterday 2 or 3 eggs were actually laid in there. This morning when I went out to open the coops and check on everyone Raven was in there, so I was happy to see it was getting used. Just went back out to check for eggs and check on Sukoshi and Raven is still in there and if another chicken walks in front of her she screetches at them!! I mean she is vocal!. Sukoshi fans her feather and "growls" a bit, but Raven is full out momma bear voice. So, it'll be interesting to see if she is going to go full out broody. I took out the two dud eggs and let her keep the one she as on and added one I took out that got laid with Sukoshi's. If she is truely broody I'll let her have the eggs laid today, but this has got to be it! I didn't want to deal with broodies at all and now there's possibly two. It's starting to get chilly here especially at night. They could have waited until spring at least. I just find it funny that not a single hen in my first coop has gone broody in the almost year that I have had them and these guys are hormonal left and right...lol
My first ever broody hatch was on Thanksgiving.
I love that through sheer willpower you aren't going to have broodies

. Don't the chickens know that you never question the queen?

I'm not a pro fan, but I'm pulling for TN because of Mariota. Not a good day yesterday.
This was a weird weekend for college ball. SC absolutely destroyed by GA, Bama looked horrible, Auburn destroyed by LSU.
At least Southern Cal. lost. I know someone on here posted during that game, and I'm sorry, but I can't stand the other USC. Overrated every year, always in the top ten just because they are USC, always lose to an unranked team

Oh yeah, chickens...

That's my problem with published studies: they are in a super controlled environment and do not take hatcher habits and quality of eggs/incubator/environment, ect into consideration. They are interesting and show some very thought provoking info, but I rely on experience over studies.

Without published, controlled studies, it would be very hard for us to isolate variables to test. Don't discount the value of a properly performed study.

If I put 20 eggs in an incubator in February and add water every day and get a 90% hatch, and put 20 eggs in an incubator in April and get a 90% hatch, and put 20 eggs in an incubator in August and get a 20% hatch, what does it tell me? Nothing...too many variables. Studies provide controlled observation of a single variable. While the results cannot be directly applied to uncontrolled environments, they can help us improve performance by monitoring or controlling variables. That is why even at home, data logging is essential if we want to improve performance.

I've often wondered if light can influence the position of a chick in the shell, just as it does a seed, even underground. With my hard to hatch eggs, I've thought about placing a moderately bright light above the incubator and setting eggs in cartons to see if the hatch rate is better than eggs on their side in no to dim light. Has anyone found a study on this?
