She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

If your stuff doesn't auction for the minimum you want, you can declare 'no sale' and state your minimum to give the highest bidder a chance to still buy at your price... but any birds we take, we aren't bringing back home, so some losses can happen...
There's an ebayer who sells Welsummer eggs, if you catch any of his auctions I recommend him highly... goes by cluckandcrow username on ebay... great quality birds and honest seller...

I just got GDW Sumtalers from him. I have only lost 4 of those. He packs good and is very friendly. I'll have to check out the other auctions.

they do the stall thing to cut down on Auction time. Its a small barn. Most that do end up at auction time are those who couldn't sell and just want to not take it home. The big live stock they auction off the most. We are very

The big live stock they auction off the most. We are very rural and most sale barns in the area alternate weekends...lots of big chicken plants around here. The migrants like fresh chickens but they don't like to pay very much. They want to pay 7$ for a hen.

I have 2 adult GDW roos from his stock and most of my Wheaten hens are from him too... I did have a trio of Welsummers, but the boy got killed so I sold off the pullets...

Ours is real small... no room for stalls, lol... but the auctioneer really works to get you the most for your stock... drags it out too much for selling chickens in the middle instead of first though...

GA, sorry about your Dad and his illness. It is very hard to loose a loved one, no matter how the circumstances play out. Especially hard since you don't have anyone to talk it out with. In both times of need and times of joy, I've found that my church family has stuck closer than a brother. Wonderful people. Would that be an option to help you meet that need???
None of the church folks here understand my individuality. Probably sounds cocky, but it's true. Seems like they want me to fit a mold before they will feel comfortable helping out. It's okay, though. I have y'all and my chickens. Hard part is being string for the kids. There will come a day when I'll have to tell them. . . that breaks me up. Anyways. THanks for the hugs and prayers and good vibes. can't hurt, right? Love you guys.

I love quail! Heard the hatch like popcorn, so good luck! I'd love to see pics of the hatch!
X2! This is so true! Sometimes I've even gotten lazy and didn't recalibrate the hygro. It's just so true, everything you said!
I have to ask, do you have calibrated thermometers and hygrometers in there? When they are zipping, what happens? They stop half way for how long? If I have a zipper that stops for more then 20-30 mins, I finish the zip by opening up the shell just enough for them to push out.
I'm in the same boat. Dad has heart failure for a year now. He raised pigeons my whole life and I never really took an interest. Now that I'm doing chickens we have so much to talk about and share! So it's such a shame, he probably won't make it through this winter and I don't even want to process that fact! So I really do understand exactly what you're saying!!

That's so sad but so awesome! She was such a beautiful baby! I'm sure she'll be very happy now with more of her kind! And how perfect that you know she'll be a beloved pet. Great news!

Might have to try quail before it's all over with.

So so sorry to hear about your dad. Time isn't fair. Big hugs your way. Hope you get as much time with him as you can.

I just wanted to let you know anytime you need someone to talk to shoot me a message. I lost my mom in '06 and being my father's caretaker I've watched his steady decline over the past 4 or 5 years. He too has COPD/Emphysema along with spinal stenosis and average old age decline (he's 84.) It's hard. I'm 41 and the thought of loosing him still scares me. So big hugs and lots of prayers!

Thank you for this, Amy. I'm not comfortable with my emotions, but this situation isn't really giving me a chance. Never been a big talker, but I sure do appreciate the sentiment.

Right now, I am strong for the kids when I can be, then I get drunk and dance or watch tv when I can't. It's too rainy to finish our chicken stuff, so I throw myself into dance to get out my aggression. It's nice to know you are there.

PS: If I seem a little pilled up or drunk lately, it's prob bc I might just be. Love my chicken fam

honestly I think he thought that because I didn't know ANYTHING about Bator's and hatching that I was an easy $ made. What he doesn't know is I learn fast, research what I don't understand, and take lots of advice. My hubby bought me a little 48 egg cheapo Bator to use until he can get me a new one. He told me he was only buying one more so I better get the one I want.....soooooo...I set the bar high I want a 300 egg capacity Brinsea. 1800.00$ price tag but he said I better get the one I want....I know, I know, I'm a smarty pants...lol. I would be happy with 180 egg capacity. I order a lot of shipped eggs, I'm trying to establish different breeds.

That's insane!!! I can't do that much...I wish I could. Where is Georgia are you? I am in Savannah.

Speaking of bad ratios, I think more of my golden sebrights are going to be boys :hit

:hugs. My ratio is normally 50 50.

Great hatch!!!  We are full blue too, for the reasons you have stated.  Congrats on the high numbers!

Are further north?? Right, close to Augusta??

praying for you. They don't know for sure where its headed I'm only 60 miles inland from Brunswick....that wouldn't be pretty.

Okay so your not too far from me!!

My son wants some bobwhite quail, so we are considering do a quail hatch next spring. Depends if I can do the housing the way I want.
Are you aware that you can effectively "free range" Bobwhites?
I raised pointing dogs for 40 years, and trained them on pen-raised bobwhite quail because the no-till farming practices ( and fox ) had decimated the native quail & pheasant populations. I kept a dozen birds or so in a "recall cage", which is nothing more than a wire mesh cage with a cone-shaped chute built in to the side. The idea is to leave one male in the cage while releasing the rest, which spend their time grazing on seeds, insects, etc. in a natural setting, eventually working their way back to the cage where the male left inside has been calling to regroup the rest of his "buddies". The returning birds re-enter the cage through the recall chute (made from 1/2" hardware cloth), which is at ground level on the outside wall & high enough off the floor on the inside that they can't/won't try to go back out.

If you have the room, you can build a permanent coop for them with the same sort of chute; just have to build a flap over the outside of the chute to keep out predators.

The other thing, besides predator protection, is to keep them dry. Wild birds, because they have access to seeds, have an oil in their feathers to help them stay dry. Pen-reared birds, fed primarily on commercial feed, lack that oil; getting chilled when they're wet can kill them.

Last time I checked, places like Dunn's Supply Store sold the portable recall pens. Also, you can probably build one easy enough from DIY video's on Youtube using the same clamps & pliers used for making rabbit cages.

Good luck!

UPDATE: Things have changed; Dunn's is now known as Dunn's Sporting Goods, and as far as I can tell no longer sells recall pens, but there ARE several youtube video's showing how to make them. Even found a place that sells pre-made recall chutes...they're a PIA to fashion yourself, so worth the purchase price.

I've got a lovely hurricane headed my direction... I'm going to build something to house my birds in the garage for this weekend. :-( we just bought this house. Send prayers please. It seems like I've got everything I ever dreamed of as a kid, the loving husband, healthy kids, a safe place to call home, and chickens. I'm hoping that we make it safely through this.
Prayers for safety!

No, I had not heard that. Honestly I have not done a whole lot of research....YET. I do plan on building a nesting house onto the back of the shed in the perimeters of my run for the coop that I plan on turning into the silkie coop and then enclosing the end of the run and adding a door for our entrance. I told him that if we do this he can have a pair-which in reality will mean that I will probably let him have keep between 4-6...lol. Depends on how my housing turns out.
