Stick each one in a ziploc baggie first, or double baggies even... then crack open and work the shell apart... best to baggie them first in case of exploders...

I'd do a float test to make sure they are gone. Then I usually smack the air cell with the back of a spoon and slooowwwly open up just the air cell. Feel inside before going too far. Wet the membrane if there is any question whether its alive or not. Then just carefully peel it open. Pay attention to how the duckling is curled up.

That's just how I do it. Others may have other ways.

Just thinking about how many duds I had. I was hoping for some khaki crosses before we get rid of them. I wasn't sure if I needed a scalpel or something.

so a bowl with warm water? Will it look like a Mexican jumping bean if its still alive? Or jus sink if its dead

It could still float if its dead, if the air cell is big enough to cause floatation. Wait until it stabilizes in the water. If its alive, it will just barely wiggle in the water. If it doesn't wiggle, it could still be alive. But if it does wiggle, then its definitely alive.

He was a beauty. So sorry for your loss, I was hoping to hear you announce that he'd found his way home.

But a handful of feathers does not mean he's gone for certain, there are plenty of stories here about feathers and blood but the victim shows up one day.
