Always sand; no shortage of that in SC; must be some dry sand SOMEWHERE around there, even if you have to spread it out on a dry tarp. But hay molds quickly and is a breeding ground for unsafe mushrooms...![]()
Winter wheat, for one; if it'll grow there; should be available at a farm store. They should at least be able to tell you of other options. What type of grass seeds would do well this time of year? I would love to thicken up my whole back yard along with the run area.

I need to order a couple of the smaller sized diapers,so I can get her into them quicker....lol The two I have were made with Peepin mind, and then he couldn't wear them. His leg/balance problems made it impossible. I put it on him once and it looked like he was having a siezure flailing around....lolOh she is super cute!! I love that silver color. I NEED to see a pic when she's big enough for chicken diapers!!
My first baby got very sick a lot. And of course it would always be the middle of the night, so lots of ER visits. He gave me major anxiety! Then the next was my "easy" baby. Now this one is a mix between the two. There is always that one!!![]()
Good luck on lockdown and hatch!!
Thank you!!![]()
Now I must go to google!!
Have you searched byc for "runs" or "enclosures". There are tons of picture heavy threads. And I agree, that this will be your biggest cost but once it's done you will love it!! i went all out for my run and way over budget but I do t regret it for a second!
Others beat me to it. I hatched chicks beginning of October and moved them outside at 3 weeks with a heating pad "cave". I'm in NY and we are have freezing temps at night and they are thriving. Plus mine are not in the coop yet, just the run!
awesome!!!![]()
Hey @scflock or @amylynn2374 Is a 3-page post parade-worthy?![]()
Yep, Ruby makes her own kind of parades![]()
Toatlly agree. And as a buyer, even if I had something that honestly kept me from getting there, I wouldn't blame you.How do all y'all deal with no call/no show?
I tend to give people benefit of the doubt, because life happens. But here's the story.
I posted Scooter, my Golden Narragansett tom, Baby, and a bronze hen on several local Facebook poultry groups. Just a short time later I got a "very interested" message and we set a date and I provided contact info. I posted "pending" on the listings.
On the designated date I was home, waiting. And waiting. And waiting. I messaged her, and she said oh, sorry, she had an out of town emergency. Ok, I get that. It happens, and responding to people on Facebook would not be a priority for me in that case. So she said she'd be back Tuesday (today). We set another time, today at noon. Well, it's 2 pm, and no call, no show. I messaged her on FB that I'd be leaving soon for the day, and Messenger showed she saw the message. But no reply.
I don't think I have any obligation to "hold" them for her at all, nor do I have any inclination to do her any favors. I posted "Available" on all the listings and refrained from commenting why.
Does anyone disagree?
I held until I got burned a few times. Now it's first come, first serve, unless 2 people want to come on the same day. The first to reply is given a 2 hour window, then the second is given a shot if they don't show
ETA: I never take the ad down until the money is in my hand

Walnut, I absolutely would not give her any preference. Nor would I agree to be home if she should call and want to set an other time. If she's that unreliable, do you really want to sell any of your animals to her anyway??? I love SC's plan: first come, first serve with 2 hour window for first party, if 2 parties are showing up the same day. When I'm selling stuff, I let folks know that it's first come, first serve right up front. If they have a distance to travel, I might give them the benefit of the doubt, but... am sure to have their telephone # in case an other party wants to come to purchase.I held until I got burned a few times. Fall is a wonderful time to sow grass seed. Are you refreshing your lawn, or wanting to create grazing opportunities for your flock? If you have 5 - 6 weeks before chicklets will be going into your run, I'd just sow a regular mix of grass seed. If you're not super fussy about having a golf course lawn, I'd be sure it had a good mix of clover for increased protein for your flock. However, along with the clover comes lots of bees... so if you have little ones who will be playing in the grass, that's a consideration. Or, if you are planning to do a garden, winter rye will get a good strong start now, and come back again in the spring. But... it's a bit of a beast to turn it under. Annual rye grass might work for you... you're further south than me! That's a sow it now, it winter kills, and provides a nice mulch of dead thatch in the spring. What type of grass seeds would do well this time of year? I would love to thicken up my whole back yard along with the run area.
