She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Somebody's sure to grab it up quick. I don't envision incubating more than once, maybe twice a year, for replacements, and only then if a broody hen fails me. I guess my Hova-bator will last me as long as I'll ever need it to. Last time (first hatch in 20+ years) I took out all the turner rails but one & still had unused holes.

LOL no kidding.

After hearing the flaky broody stories, I will stick with incubators. Though I would like to experience a good broody hen at work.

They are seriously worth their weight in gold... I have some good ones, and 3 great ones... good broody's run in my Am hens lines... eggs in Spring, hon... :D ;)

If you supplement the broody's hatch with incubator chicks, how many chicks can a good broody mother?

My only experience with broody hens is the growling stage where it's my job to get eggs from a feathered cobrasaurus.

My Am took 21 as her highest so far and didn't have to wait for nighttime either... just brought the chicks out of the bator, showed her and she lifted up so I could stick them under her... no losses... and she growls and grumps, but I can lift her and mess around without her pecking me... OH can't get near her though... and if I pick up one of her chicks and it screams, she pecks it lightly to reprimand it, lol...

Her and her 21... :)

Cool, thanks! Because of the design of the incubator (the egg tray slides out the side), and the fact that I'm giving everyone to my broody, I'm going to leave everyone in the incubator until it's delivery time (most likely after dark Sunday, or maybe when I move Frieda and the chicks she hatches to the pen). It'll be easy enough to pull the drawer a half inch or so to let humidity out, if I need to--or to add water to my sponges if they dry out before I have wet chicks to up the humidity;)

So much for just about all parts of that plan!

Say hello to the newest ayam cemani on my farm :love

Her middle toes are clear instead of black, which means they will turn black with age, but it's not as good as them being actually black so I probably won't keep her for my breeding flock. Tonight I think I'll slip her under Snap, who changed nests again and lost all her eggs that weren't killed during her other nest changing shenanigans.

she is so cute!

I have had a heck of a day. I saved a little old chihuahua from being hit by cars on a gloomy raining afternoon. Spent all day trying to find her owner...if she has one. We may keep her if we can't find owners. Well trained and behaves very well with kids. I know she is some little old ladys best friend. And it breaks my heart that she is here with me and not her.
Ross, most local papers have a free lost and found section. You could also check the local shelter and see if anyone has reported her missing, check a local vet to see if she's microchipped. You're right, someone is probably frantic about her being missing. When you put an ad in the paper, limit how much you say about her so that you don't have someone claim her just to get a free dog.

And you could do a CL ad too. Nice save, Ross.

Oh boy, she's at it again
