She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Today is the day. We go to war with the fox this aftetnoon. If y'all don't see me back on here something went terribly wrong, lol. We've stayed well away from his den, I didn't want him to be scared off by our scent and leave before we could get him. I'll update y'all again this evening. I'm not giving up til that **** fox and any others I find are dead. I'm hell bent on this.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Amy, did you notice any bubbles or like a white film on the top before stirring? I use crumbles too and I used an air tight lid at first, not knowing better and it fermented quick. I just moved up to a stainless steel pail I bought at the feed store. I try to scoop it out in the morning before stirring because I seem to get the bulk of it out then and it's less watery. I picked up this rubber pan yesterday to try because I heard it is somewhat freeze resistant. It's little giant brand and comes in all different sizes. Until now, I have also been using a dog bowl from the dollar store.

Cuties, Ross!
That's great! Yes, I agree, shipped eggs call for full on red! Especially since each chick that makes it ends up being a pretty expensive chick. I was so involved in my last hatch. Noting the time of each pip, assisting, etc. If I had let them be without interfering, it probably would have been a 50% hatch rather then 90%. All are healthy today, 6 wks later.
Nope, no bubbles-just mash.

Getting cold here, but Dudley loves his jackets

He is so styling!

Ruby, not a good idea to ferment in any kind of metal. The acid in the ferment will eventually corrode, and eat through the metal, even stainless. Not to mention the metal that will leach into the FF. Better off with plastic. Love the rubber dishes. I need to buy some of those. Wish they made them with a more stable base. Perhaps I'll have to build a base to set a couple in, kind of like the raised bowl holders for geriatric dogs! I think that Beekissed has put her rubber dish in an old tire for more solar gain.

With the larger bowls, I've used old tires w/o rims; don't have to be an exact fit.
Sorry...didn't see the last sentence of your post.

I did read that in just about every article. Either glass or plastic but no metals.

Gotta agree with lazy gardner... no metal of any kind if using ACV or fermenting... the acidity not only corrodes and breaks down, but as it does it leaches into their food/water... heavy metals are toxic.. just fyi... :)

Edited for spelling, lol...

Really!!?! I read the opposite! Crap! That's why I went and bought the stainless steal. It said the plastic would leach into the feed, which does make sense. I should get glass then! :barnie

Why not one of those big crocks, tan on the bottom, dark brown on the top, with a wire bail closure for the top? Functional & good-looking too.

ZStainless steel leaches trace amounts of chromium when subjected to acids.

Stoneware and glass are safest, plastic or rubber next. I do fermented veggies in canning jars.

If you want to ferment really fast, buy some cauliflower and pack it in a canning jar. Add brine 3 Tbs osher salt per quart of water. Weight down cauliflower with a glass filled with water, being sure not to seal the jar. After a week, enjoy your pickled cauliflower and use the brine to start your ferment.

I don't feed my birds fermented feed. I feel there is too high a risk of growing aflatoxins, and my turkeys don't care for them. I do feed sprouted grains, though.
