how thorough you are, i wrote everything u have there and im going to try and answer now, but i have two things id like specified, as far as the eggs go, i feel like the age and the storage should be tracked as well as the the type because of your fridge eggs last year. Also the percent who made it to three days, is that chicks made it alive after hatch to day 3 or the eggs?

I really appreciate the learning oppurtunity that yall are offering me here!

I'm incubating in a Brinsea Octagon 20 Advanced with humidity pump, currently residing at an altitude of 5000 feet in the high deserts of New Mexico. Humidity is almost always low here, dropping in the single digits at times, so I feel the pump was a good investment. I don't double-check the humidity but am marking air cells. I do double check the temp with a Brinsea Spot-check once in a while.

Day 18 here. Just did a final candling on my eggs and may have 3 late quitters that I marked, but left in. So I'm counting 10 still looking good for lock-down. Took out the rails and removed the turning cradle, put in the shelf-liner and laid the eggs down but will not raise the humidity for another day since several of my eggs were set a day later (and some of those were from the fridge) and air-cells seem a little small.

This is my first batch with local eggs, so it's a test hatch to see how it goes and what adjustments I need to make in the future. All were under 7 days old at set. Humidity day 1-7 was at 40%, 7-14 was at 35% and 14-19 at 30%. Next batch I'll start at 35%. Didn't see any internal pips so I'm comfortable holding off lockdown for the extra day.

That's chicks that live to three days without health issues that require culling. Most terminal/cull issues will present by three days. For instance, chicks with malformed digestive systems will be fine while living on yolk but when they move to solid food, the issues start. Or those with peritonitis or other issues will reach a critical state by 3 days.

That is a great topic. I have had that happen many times myself, but you rarely see it talked about on BYC. I think there's a little shame and sadness when it happens.
That being said, 2 AMs from the first hatch didn't make it through day 4

One slipped a tendon, and some people may can correct that, but I can't. That's a cull for me. I'm not sure what happened to the other. It was after the customer took it home. She said it quit eating and drinking, she tried nursing it with nutri drench and egg yolk, but it still passed. Sounded very similar to what happened with my first BCM chicks. I should have brought it up, because those were also pullet eggs. That's 2 different breeds that I have had after hatch deaths in pullet eggs

Firsthand experience- I've only been hatching for a year. But have hatched consistently each month, sometimes running multiple batches. I've also hatched peachicks and quail, but primarily chickens. My last 3 hatch rates of mine own eggs were 100%, 100%, and 90%. I've also hatched a lot of shipped eggs with rates from 0-90%.

Your general location-Southern NY

Time of year/average weather conditions- I hatch year round. From hot and humid to cold and dry.

Brand and model of incubator- Brinsea Mini & octagon 20, both Eco.

How it's equipped (still air, forced air, type of thermostat such as analog or digital, and proportional or not if known)-Forced air, glass thermometers, dial hygrometers (I own a spot check too). I prefer to hand turn my eggs 5xday but I also have an auto-turner for larger batches.

Incubation set temperature and where measured - around 100 degrees at the top of the eggs.
What kind of eggs- mostly Silkies, shipped and my own. But I'll hatch anything. Ducks will be my next challenge.

How you control humidity and what you tried to maintain- the brinsea mini holds humidity amazing. I usually fill one well to reach 45% days 1-18 and 1 & 1/2 wells to reach 75% for the last 3 days. The octagon 20 has been a nightmare this winter, humidity has run very low and I'm working on a solution. I like higher humidity for both incubation and hatch.

How long it took to hatch-I usually have hatches on day 20 for chickens.

Whether you assisted in hatching-yes, I assist while hatching if necessary. I also remove chicks as soon as they start knocking the other eggs around.

What percentage made it to 3 days- I usually always have 100% make it.

Eta: I have 11 eggs on day 10 in my mini that I am hand turning. These are my first "paint" silkie eggs from my own flock.

Im Melissa and i live deep in Southern LA, the temp today is 75* weve had alot of warm weather this year, but also a few nights at freezing temps. So i estimate 90* days, 70* nights followed by 75* days 55* nights and everything inbetween. Half a dozen days lower at 45-50*, nights at 27-40* . Im new, Ive only hatched 5 times in total, startin last Sept. with mostly stellar results. (Tribute to the equiptment!)

Its always Wet, you can nearly drink the air more often than not. Ive never used a seperate dehumidifier but the air inside the home is about 15% less humid than outdoors with either the heater or the A/C running. I never have needed to add water to the bator until lockdown, it maintains between 25-30% all by itself.

I have a Brinsea Octo 40 equipt with digital and forced air.

Now it gets tricky,

This set i moved the temp up during the last week of incubation, display is at 100.6 now but my probe is telling me 98.9 which i know is -.8 off. Probe is centered width, and depth at mid top of egg height. So i think the built in is +.5 But i screwd up, put it too close to a window, and its dragging me down. Its more stable now thats its moved, and after i discoved the low temps, previously i had it at 99.8 and that kept hatchers on time during warmer months. I had early hatchers during my first set before i realized the temp on the display wasnt compleatly accurate, it was set at this temp at that time from the previous owner. I adusted for my second-4th hatchs. Got 86, 87 and 91% during those hatchs. Didnt calculate this time, it sucked nothing else needs saying. Ive adusted and i have 2 ducklings and 4 EEs going into lockdown tumro.

At lockdown i only fill one tray, and it shoots up to around 60-70 and stays there for about 36 hours. Theyre very long deep trays on this model.

I have chicks and ducklings who have hatched from day 19-22 as im learning the adjustments.
