She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I'm jealous of you people who can burn wood. I got a ticket in the mail a week ago for having "visible smoke" coming from my chimney on a designated no-burn day. If the states stupid app would work, maybe I'd know what day is a no-burn day. I need to move!
Seriously?? WOW.

Not sure if we have ever discussed this or not. But I'm wondering what others feel about light during incubation. The room that my incubator is in has a window, but I have a heavy curtain on it, just to help keep the cold from permeating through the window. So the room stays fairly dark all the time. For the last few days of incubation, I have been leaving the light on in the room during the day, and turning it off at night, to be more like daytime/nighttime. Thoughts anyone?
I don't really have a thought.... (shut up!) My bator sits in the "school" room and when the sun is out it it gets light (no direct light though) and at night it's dark unless I'm in there messing around. I don't do anything different at lockdown and at hatch I'm fairly glued to the darn thing so I guess it gets plenty light then....lol Oh- I do turn the ceiling light on if the temp is a little low or turn the brooder light on and point it toward it to give it a little extra heat w/o touching that knob...

That's exactly my setup, but I leave a lamp on 24 hrs/day after lockdown.
Speaking of lockdown...
28 set
20 clears
1 blood ring
Only 7 of 28 made lockdown

With my fertility issues from the black rooster, I went ahead and did a 14 day candle of the other incubator. 14/27 are developed in that set, and those eggs are only 4 days older than the first set, so he started getting the job done more 3 weeks ago. I started collecting for the next set this morning, and he is really acting like the head of the flock now, so hopefully this next set will be better

Wow, that sucks. At least the other bator looks more promising. When did you get another bator? You should spend more time with him, you know lead by example.

Um, I'm not sure that's what he needs to give them!

I got another Octagon last month. My phone was ringing off the hook as soon as I advertised the AMs, so that was a good excuse :D
If I lead by example he will just get fat, chew tobacco, and :smack the loud hens :gig

I got it used (once) through CL, from a teacher from up in Ohio who used it in her classroom. The advance with humidity pump and all the fixin's!

My Chinabator went ker-plooey during one of my hatches on day 18. Think the heat sensor went bad. Had to keep a heat lamp above it for the last 3 days.

Oh! I think that was the hatch that killed Blobby! But I bought it shortly after that. And I love it so far, with just a few minor complaints. I've done 4 hatches in it, I think.

I remember the chinese bombing out, and you were thinking about replacing it. I thought that was the hatch after Blobby though.

My incubator sits right next to a light. So it's on till I go to bed. Haven't really thought about its effects on hatching. If I have early chicks, I will turn the light off to try and calm them down so they don't play egg bowling with the other eggs.

Maybe I'll use a lamp tonight.   Oh, no pips in my quail as of this morning.  Maybe when I get home this evening, some action will start.

I did sneak and open the bator last night.  I usually draw a vertical line down the egg to show me which side is up, so once they start bowling, I can watch closer if one gets upside down.  Well, I had forgotten my lines, so I did it real quick last night.  And of course I had to shine on a few.  Several have drawn down, so I was happy to see that!

Sorry for the disappointing lockdown, but the rest sounds more promising!  Get 'em Johnny...  :fl

Don't worry if they seem late. I've read and talked to a local quail breeder that says she gets hatches day 19 usually, all the way to day 22.

I have a question for my chickens friends. I bought a young silkie at the show last month. She's about 12 weeks old, now. I had her inside for almost a month and just moved her outside last week. Our temps were mild in the 40's and 50's. She loved going out and is doing great! But now we are having a major cold snap! Tomorrow the temps will go down below zero. Should I move her indoors? I have an area set up in my basement. I would put another young friendly pullet with her if I do, so she's not alone. Or do you think she'll be ok?
