Well, it's been a week of not-so-patiently waiting and we candled last night. How exciting! This is our first incubating experience and I can see how people get hooked.  So incredibly cool to see the little guys moving and the veining.  My kids got to watch - my 10 year old son was mildly interested but my 6 year old daughter stayed and candled all of them with me.  

I set 32 in all in 3 days - so yesterday was day 7 for the first 20. I went ahead and candled the other 12 and I could see development enough to make calls on them as well.  I ended up pulling 7 and cracked them open, I believe they were all infertile - so no fault of the bator.  They were mostly from 2 hens, 3 eggs each, and then 1 other hen, so that makes sense.  I bought 8 Marans eggs and for sure 6 are developing, 2 I was unsure of so left them in.  I was unsure of 1 or 2 other of my dark brown eggs so I left those in as well.  

The Hova-bator is performing well I think, but I do have to fiddle with it, which is frustrating.  It is maintaining temps between 99 and 100 and humidity is usually about 25%.  About twice a day I add a bit of water and let the humidity get up to 35-40% and then drop down again to 25%. From what I could see of the air cells they looked right for the stage of development they are in.

All and all I'm pleased and hopeful will have healthy chicks in 2 weeks!

This is one of the reasons I wish I had a girl but I'm stuck with 3 boys and I'm done! I had a woman come with her 6 year old daughter to buy some chicks and the hatch was still going on, I could not pull the little girl away from the incubator. She just kept staring and asking questions. It was so very cute. I think boys have a lot less patience. Good luck on the hatches!

Awww. At least you got him! He is adorable!! I've got 2 eggs going strong. Both have very saddled air cells but they are totally firm. It's hard to measure air cell growth when it just looks like a giant "V" shape. Today is day 14!

Hi everybody How is everyone? I'm getting the itch to hatch but with my move I'm reluctant to do it. I may end up sticking some eggs in the incubator anyway. I'm getting some very lovely olive eggs right now that are just begging for it!

Lost power last night in 50 mph winds.  Thank God for generators and a hubby who was able to get it up and running.  

Current stats on eggies: 

 6 chicken and 1 poult egglets still alive from a box that was scrambled by USPS.  One of those chicks is in a cracked shell, an other one is in a shell with an indent repaired by packing tape.  Air cells are a mess, but the chicks seem to be doing well.  Turkey poult is my most active dancer.  Eggs sent by Chicapee.  Beautiful colors on her Am eggs.

Second batch sent by DonRae fared better in shipping.  Arrived 100% intact.  Nice big beautiful eggs. 13 eggs.  One died early.  Rest seem to be going strong.  Air cells jiggly, but not out of place.  Due 3/26.

My gender selected eggs:  Jack was not able to stay on top of his 24 gals, so fertility was spotty.  Of 27 eggs set, I now have 20 eggs left, with some impossible to visualize inside.  Due 3/27.

I am on day 23 with my duck and turkey eggs and I just candled them and some of them look like they're starting to internal pip lock down was supposed to be Monday should I go ahead and lock them down now or will it be okay to wait till Monday?

I would stop turning them if you haven't already, and just leave them. Once you see an external pip, you can raise humidity. But someone with more experience may think differently.

I was thinking the same thing, especially if they are 28 day expected hatchers.

These duckies are soo cute! We were at a park yesterday and I saw a couple walking with their dog...and their duckling! It was just running along behind them and then under their feet. I had to do a double take to make sure what I was seeing was correct. Sure enough, it was a little yellow duckling.

I got a message from Turk. She got a new phone and is having BYC issues with it, so she said she would check in as soon as she can. Her duck hatch is progressing! 4 of 8 hatched so far.
