She Squatted!!!!!! How long until she lays?

Squatting usually lasts between 1-2 weeks before the first egg. My blue wyandotte began squatting a little over a week ago, and laid her first egg this past Sunday!! She is nearly 40 weeks old.

When you see them picking up individual pieces of straw and tossing it over their shoulders, you know they will lay THAT DAY!

ETA: another good indication is the distance between the pelvic bones (just below the vent). if you can fit 2 fingers comfortably between the bones, she will lay soon. if the distance is narrow, she still won't be laying for a while.

Last Friday one of my Silver-laced Wyandottes was doing this with leaves, then she'd go into the the coop, then come back into the yard and throw leaves, then back into the coop. When I checked later in the day...there was a small tan egg! Way to go Lucy!

She, and the 5 other pullets, are 21 weeks today. My EEs started laying 2 weeks ago.

AAAGGGHHH!!! I just saw my BO squat yesterday... she spent the whole morning in her nesting box... now she has been walking around for the past two hours trying to push out her egg... I'm not sure if it should take this long. I'm getting nervous because it is very red and I don't want it to be a prolapse... I don't know what to do!!

I'll definitely be watching for some straw throwing over the next couple of days then!

It's so cool how they give us all these signs that they are ready to lay.. I'm loving the excitement... Apart from straw throwing, i'm listening out for the egg song!! Ooooh! The anticipation!

Well... it was a prolapse... poor thing... I eventually got the egg out with some help from a friend. We pushed the uterus back in, its out again though. I guess I'll keep pushing it back in. Poor girl, I hope she makes it! It was my first egg too... I hope the other girls have better luck!

That's really sad... Sorry to hear.

Hope she can get better.

Oh, that is sad. I hope she will be okay. My favorite hen Hilda is acting so strange today, and this is her 2nd egg. Keep us posted!
