Squatting usually lasts between 1-2 weeks before the first egg. My blue wyandotte began squatting a little over a week ago, and laid her first egg this past Sunday!! She is nearly 40 weeks old.
When you see them picking up individual pieces of straw and tossing it over their shoulders, you know they will lay THAT DAY!
ETA: another good indication is the distance between the pelvic bones (just below the vent). if you can fit 2 fingers comfortably between the bones, she will lay soon. if the distance is narrow, she still won't be laying for a while.
