Sheep and Hay

Are you asking if they can eat only hay without any supplements, like grain? If so the answer is yes, but it depends on how they were raised and the quality of the hay. It will be easier to feed them only hay if they were raised on just hay or pasture, but you can transition sheep off of grain as well. However some more commercial breeds, and ones that grew up eating grain, may need a little to maintain their body condition, especially during the winter. I only feed grain as treats to mine or if I notice that they are starting to look a little thin and need supplementation, other than that they only eat hay and some alfalfa pellets. If the hay is good quality you will also have an easier time keeping them on a diet of only hay.
