Would you cull a hen repeatedly laying shelless eggs? If not, how would you treat? She is an Easter-Egger about 1-1/2 year old. Sporadically she lays shelless eggs, and has laid 2 this week. I have given her two rounds of calcium supplements of every day for a week each time. No improvement. She has a constant supply of oyster shell along with the rest of the flock.

I had a similar situation with a Silkie hen and I did everything that you did. She also had a recurrent eye infection that went systemic which was also causing the soft eggs. So unless you want to sink a butt ton of money into identifying and treating the bacteria, I’d cull her.

The question is how long have you treated her with calcium?
This issue is well documented on BYC, do the search for this.

There are various factors could cause this - lack of calcium, reproductive issues, stress, bullying, overcrowd..etc...

There are a various options available for this sad situation as I see it.
Continue with calcium citrate D+
Seek advice/help from BYC and/or vet
Close monitoring, take action as needed
Get implant
Cull - free the poor little hen from pain and suffering.

I am going through this myself at the moment.
My hen is still eating, digging my garden, and seem fine except for the egg without shell....I am....
This is a 1st for me. I am new to this and encouraged by many of the responses in th 2months of my Clucking with my girls.
I have learned alot up to now.🥴👀 From BYC 🐓🐔
I never saw a egg without a shell. Reminds me of the movie Alein.
I have 5girls and I don't know witch one did it. 3reds 2leghorns. I have been doing all the things that I have been told and learned to do for them, from proper layer feed to calcium concerns, grit, water, when and what to give as treats but this is a 1st for me. NO SHELL 👀🍳
Your help would be greatly appreciated. 🥚🙏🏻👍🐔👌🐓🪺🤔😎🥴

I am not a chicken expert, like you I am still learning many things from here and the members & educators here are supportive.

At the moment I am continue with calcium citrate vitamin D tablet and watch my hen with hawk eyes and see how it goes. I will work out what to do next if this is not working.

My hen is an Isa Brown so she is most likely having reproductive issue because she is commercial chicken, made to lay excessive eggs.

I found out that my hen have access to all calcium, but my other hen bully her so she did not get to eat the free choice calcium. I have removed the bully in the afternoon so my Isa Brown get to eat her calcium grid. Still see how how this goes.
