There are a couple of factors, stress, heat, and not enough calcium.
Sometimes it's just a phase to keep you on your toes.

If you are providing your hens with calcium, whether through supplements or cleaned and crushed up egg shells, then your next bet is stress. Stress can be caused by a variety of factors. It may be caused by heat stress due to the current summer weather, or if you have changed something recently such as the coop's location, etc.

Thanks for all the posts.I think my hen may have become stressed lately due to the fact the the wind destoyed the chicken coop and the chickens now have a tempoary shelter while we build a new coop.

My 2 year old Cochin dropped a shelless egg at my feet today! I was shocked. She gets oyster shell and laying pellets and sunflower seeds as a treat. We had a recent lice breakout and she wasn't too affected (a few egg sacks near her vent) but I treated her anyways. Did you get to the bottom of your issue?
