SHE'S BROODY!!!!! (formally A problem with my muscovy's nest)

Miss Lydia, I think this warm winter has messed with many of the ducks/chickens in the north. I know down here we are having days in the 80's then days in the 60's

Made it easy to put young one's outside but it is very annoying.

They are so funny. I can't believe yours are scared of their own nest/eggs.

So 8 is menopause age in muscovy?

Good to know.

I will keep an eye out for updates on yours. Who can resist muscovy ducklings? Or ducks for that matter.

egg #3 for my middle aged girls this morning, but they just jumped over it and out the door, yesterday when i went to count eggs in the other room there were 12 duck eggs and yolk all over most so i took out 4 and cook for the dogs then added more bedding so hopefully that won't happen again. Still noone interested yet. But thats okay I look forward to seeing yours and since you have done butchering already looking forward to tips when we are over run with drakes..

are you planning on selling or freezer?

Yours remind me of my previous runners. I used to find eggs everywhere, middle of the duck run, middle of the yard or some random corner of the run where they would bury them.

That I don't miss. I used to worry in the morning that they'd trample the ones that were just sitting around.

I'll be freezing. Maybe selling but only to friends etc, not advertising. Anytime you need tips on butchering, let me know. I will be happy to pass on what experience I have.

I actually caught my hen off of the nest this morning when I was feeding and watering before work at about 6:45 am. I was surprised she didn't run right back to it.
After my problems with my chicken, I am leaving my hen locked in all day. My drake and I have worked out a schedule and he is very good about it.

He will wait in the morning for me to open the duck sized door and exit the run. Then run around the yard for a bit. In the evening, he waits (impatiently) for me to go out and open the duck door so he can go back in. He then struts his stuff for the Rouen ducklings and the hen. It is hilarious. I was worried he may start going after the chickens since he is without a mate for now but no problems so far.

Sounds like your drake is a cool dude. The longest my duck stayed off the nest last year when broody was about 30 min. she would eat run jump in the pool and splash around poop the most gross poop then gobble up a bunch of feed and get back on the nest, it's amazing how much they can do in such a short time, and tonight when i went to close everyone up I found my Blue/white girl sitting on her and her sisters 9 eggs so I closed her door and locked her 2 sisters in another building in a large dog crate, maybe she'll sit if they aren't with her. I numbered the eggs today so I will take any that are laid from now on 9 ducklings is enough at a time for us. They do like to strutt their stuff don't they? So we will see what tomorrow brings and just maybe I'll be having some ducklings not too far behind you !!! will update tomorrow. What day is your girl on now?

This is day 8, I think. She laid her last egg on 3/1 but was sitting pretty regularly for a few days before that so I'm not sure if incubation would have started on the others.

I hope your girl decides to stay on the nest. I so wish that some of my drakes had been girls. I really wanted some blues.

Some day.
