She's just sitting around doing nothing - UPDATE pg. 3

thanks, JJ.

we ended up not having any yogurt, so i gave her some buttermilk with acidophilus (my mom bought some in powder form for my younger siblings). she wouldn't take it herself, so we used a syringe and let it trickle down her throat. she was a good girl and swallowed when i told her to.

i'm glad she didn't fight, as she has really sharp spurs. (i think i should clip them...

) i'll keep you updated on her condition. i'm really hoping that she'll get better after giving her the buttermilk and also some DE (for worms).

Hiya. If by chance she has a serious case of worms, BYC folks generally report that food grade DE will not be enough to get the situation under control. You will need wormer so you might want to get that pretty quickly. If you can get some plain yogurt pretty quickly that would be good. She's in some notable distress so a good time to dot the i's and cross the t's.
All my best for your dear girl!!! She is so sweet to trust you and swallow for you

UPDATE:
The stuff coming out of her crop is the liquid mixed with some goo (as I found out this morning). I gather that it means that she's eaten more. (

) As far as I could tell she hadn't drunk any water, so I used the syringe to put about a tablespoon in last night along with the milk/acidophilus mixture. (Mom used the buttermilk for her delicous buttermilk biscuits with homemade strawberry jam.) This morning (around 10:00) I gave her 2 TB of water and 1 TB of the mixture, but then she brought it back up.

Around 11:30 I gave her another TB of the mixture and 1 TB of water, since she wouldn't let me put any more than that in. I would give her some mashed up pellets mixed with warm water if I thought she'd keep it down, but I don't think she would. That's the reason she's losing weight: she isn't eating anything much. And if she is, it's all coming out in the gooey stuff. She seems to be improving a bit, so I'm thankful for that.

ok. this is gross: her entire backside was/ maybe still is crawling with maggots! the flies have laid their eggs on her poo which is stuck to her back feathers. i doused her in DE, but that didn't get off the poo, just the majority of the maggots. and the creepy thing is that they weren't there earlier.

my mom says that we are probably going to have to put her down, b/c she is not eating anything and is basically starving to death. she didn't eat the cornmeal stuff (mostly water with some cornmeal) i tried feeding her.
i guess i am not really that upset. out of the 24 chickens i've had, about 14 or 15 have died and/or been disposed of through death. oh well. i guess i'm getting slightly calloused.

Geez - that's a lot of death. In what period of time have these deaths occurred?
The hen with maggots - they must be washed off - there are recent posts about how best to get rid of maggots - does she have an injury? I don't understand why they're there otherwise? She may be sick and not eating due to an untreated injury/infection that requires cleansing and antibiotics. EMERGENTLY.

well, the first 2 were roos - my dad killed them for us. the next 2 choked on crumbles. then 3 got taken by a pair of foxes. the other we literally saved from the fox's mouth, and she got sick and died. (don't know what caused it.) then 3 that were left of my first flock got taken to the butcher along with Buster, this flock's roo. then 2 hens got taken by the hawk. that's why so many have died.

it's been 3 years.

i'm not sure if she has an injury. nothing happened to her as far as i know, and know that i've seen the maggots, i am creeped out. (they have given me the chills. i got "goosebumps" outside even though it's in the 80s.) i don't really want to touch her again, to be honest. i guess i will - after i eat my supper.

the maggots are there most likely b/c of all the poo stuck on her feathers. it's sticky and she has not been moving around, so when she did go, it was all runny and sticky, like paste.

what should i wash her with? i read somewhere about washing them with a sort of oil, but i don't remember what. kerosen is for leg mites, right? (thankfully, i haven't had them get those yet!)

This is a call for help for Lotheriel and her hen who needs help fast.

Maggots first and then read back to the beginning - lots of troubles.

Lotheriel, hopefully you'll have some guidance real soon so you can hunker down after that dinner!

You can bath the dear girls butt in warm water to clean it off, trying not to stress her. You can even gently cut off some of the poo and feather parts that it's stuck to - just don't cut close to her body so as to avoid cutting her. I know the maggots are gross and my heart goes out to you big time but she really needs you to help her. Lots of good karma in this for you!

Lothriel you have had some very good help here from JJ >>>you need to give that girl a bath to remove the caked poo and then squirt some sterile saline over the section with maggots ...they will lay their egg in the flesh>the saline will irritate them and then you will see them move.... you need to do this immediately
Now as I understand it you have not wormed her yet? >>> use the broadspectrum product. You need not to delay further but worm her now...
The crop problem is simply a symptom that other things are going on with her.... Do the above first and give her some baby parrot handfeeding formula for nutrition and put electrolytes in the waterer...
