Ok long story short Lulu my little faverolles pullet hit the four month mark on the 3rd. Today she's been squat walking but not constantly when she does squat walk she complains loudly. She isn't shrieking just a long, loud chicken noise. She kind of sounds like an old lady complaining. Her comb is getting pretty red and I looked her over as good as she would let me, she's terribly grouchy. I didn't see or feel anything funny, so my question is do you guys think her point of lay is just that dramatic? This is my first faverolles "becoming a woman" is this just business as usual for these guys. She's eating and drinking, poop is normal, no lethargy. But honestly this is the loudest, grumpiest pullet I've ever had the pleasure to be around. Is there anything I can do for her besides invest in earplugs?

Hens often become irritable before laying. As you can see, because she's eating, drinking, pooping, and not lethargic, she is obviously healthy. When she starts laying, she'll become a normal, happy chicken again. I don't have faverolles, so I don't know if they are grumpier than other breeds, and there probably isn't anything you can do but wait, with earplugs in. :)

Hens are sensitive to decreasing day length. If you could put a light in the coop to give her as much light as we had at the solstice, it could help with the laying and the noise!

Well crap, I've just got a PMSing pullet I suppose. She was never normal but today she's coming up to me making that noise, I'm like what do you want me to do? I tried to give her a piece of melon she just spaced out and stared at it. This right here is why I don't have kids. :)

I give my African Grey hen less light to stop eggs. She gets lights out at 7pm, on at 7 am! Egg-layers need increasing day length. Your hen is SAD that the solstice passed her by before she was ready to lay!

What size eggs do African greys lay? Do you eat them? How often does she lay?

LOL! Tiny eggs! The size of the end of your thumb, like a quail. I do not want her to lay, she is a pet with no cock-bird so the eggs are infertile. She does lay about twice a year, unless I control the light. So far on the less light plan, no eggs. For chickens, you would call this light neutering. Keep the roosters in the dark 12 hours/day to keep the fighting and crowing down! But, it is bad if you want eggs.
