Got my 6 Shetland Hen chicks today along with a free extra Bruges Fighter. The Shetland Hen chicks (5 black and a lighter one with a chipmunk pattern) are doing great thus far. Unfortunately, the Bruges Fighter chick arrived with a pasty butt and seems to be struggling. I am brooding them with a radiant heat brooder and no supplemental lighting. All settled down nicely under the brooder as the daylight faded while making contented peeps. I'll keep posting as things move forward.

Will try to get photos over the weekend as I left home before daybreak this morning. But my wife called and said all 7 were out from the brooder plate, eating their feed, and drinking water this morning after daylight.Oh yay, congratulations! Yes they are... I have been ordering chicks for close to 50 years now and still get just as excited now as I did then when I initially open the box upon their arrival.
Week one update: the Bruges Fighter chick did not survive the weekend but that was expected with his failure to thrive. Fortunately, the Shetland Hen chicks are doing great and the brooding with the radiant heat plate is so much better than using a heat lamp.
