Shipped eggs broken...

Actually shipping in a carton can work quiet well. the bottom part of the cartom is actually pretty strong and if you reinforce the top with more cardboard it works. I used to use bubble wrap but i dont like spinning the eggs that much in order to wrap them and had more breakage with that method (although not a lot) than I do with the carton method. But I take my time packing them in the carton where as the person who shipped to the OP didnt.

I love buying eggs online because it gives me the opportunity to improve and expand my little flock of Silkies. Those that I have bought from fellow BYC'ers have been wonderful!!! excellent packaging, great communication, and interest from the sellers on how the eggs are developing.

Totally opposite experience with the two times I bought eggs on eggbid. 1st seller was 3 weeks late in even mailing them--her excuse was that the hens had slowed down on laying, normally an acceptable excuse except that I noticed the day after my auction, she began another auction for the same exact thing!!. When the eggs arrived, they had been wrapped in PAPER TOWELS; 2 had cracked open and leaked their contents onto the other eggs; the order was for 12+, well, she sent 12 plus 1, and the "1" looked like a non-Silkie egg. Just candled them this morning and big surprise---not a single one with veining.... She won't even respond to my emails. The other online auction---the seller never responded to my numerous emails 4 days after the end of the auction...still haven't heard from her, so I consider that one "voided".

As for me---I'll stick with the BYC folks

Doc Henry, I had the same thing with the same vendor. I got a sob story email about personal problems, but there was never a refund mentioned. I'm escalating it now.

This pack job does look familiar. There was recently a thread about some one fighting back on ebay. Same type of eggs and packaging just looked like it. Can't find the thread, perhaps someone else has the link.

You have to be very careful with the contaminated eggs. The bacteria may have already entered the eggs through the shell. This can cause the eggs to explode in your incubator. If you try, candle after 7 days and look for development and discard if nothing happened. I personally would not even try, because of the contamination. I know you are trying to save what it left, but that may be the wrong thing to do.

As for shipping I like to point out a rule UPS uses. Not that you can ship eggs with them, but they use this to determine claims. All shipments are automatically insured up to 100 dollars with UPS. They always inspect your shipment, if you file a claim, to cut back on bad claims. The rule is 2" padding or you will not get your money back. Their argument is improper packing will result in damage. We should take this rule as a guideline when fighting sellers.

Sorry for the bad experience,
Katharina

Having eggs shipped through the mail is always a risk. Eggs were not intended to travel across the country. A buyer has to keep that in mind. With that said, its a good idea not to buy from a seller unless they have a stated policy on how they package eggs. That policy should include wrapping each egg individually in bubble wrap or some other shock-absorbing material. If your seller doesn't do that, request that they do before buying the eggs. I've sent dozen of eggs in the past two years, and I've only had one mention of a single egg that was cracked. If eggs are packaged correctly, they can be shipped with relative safety. But again, each egg should be wrapped with bubble wrap and there should be no space for the eggs to move within the box. It doesn't look like those eggs were wrapped individually in anyway... as such, there is no way they could have made it without some or most of the eggs being cracked. The seller obviously has limited experience shipping eggs. And should discontinue doing so until they learn how to package eggs correctly.

I've also bought quite few eggs in the past couple a years, and I've been fortunate to have a good experience with shipped eggs. I'm kinda picky who buy from though. I did receive one box of call duck eggs where the box had been dented in from either being dropped or hit. The eggs were packed very well and none were cracked; however, the air cells were no longer intact as a result of the box being dropped. As such, the eggs were not viable. This was because of postal service handling. I later bought more eggs from the same seller, explained to them what happened, and ask them to pack the eggs extra well. Those eggs were in fine condition when I received them. So again, sometimes even the best packaging job won't prevent eggs from being damaged in shipment.

To summarize: always be aware that you are taking a risk when you have eggs shipped, buy from reputable sellers, and inquire about the seller's egg packaging procedure if its not plainly stated.

I am so sorry for your bad experience. I have bought eggs through ebay 3 times and through BYC auction many, many times and always had pleasure to deal with sellers, they were all nice and packed great.
Only one time I got broken eggs, but seller sent me eggs again plus extras with seller's expense, so I was feeling so sorry for that.
You met a wrong seller, hope you get all refund from seller soon.

Got some more eggs from my seller who shipped the broken eggs. This time they were packed really well. Individually bubble wrapped and lots of stuffing in the box. Not a single one broken. So they will be going in the incubator tonite. Hope these are good eggs. I have candled a few of the other eggs and some look good so far. At least I think so. Not always sure what Im looking at......

OK I am the one that sent to olliecatch. The egg were package very well. They had Big bubble wrap on the bottom. Each egg was wrapped with small bubble wrap the were pack in the box very well. There was another layer of egg and Big Bubble wrap another layer of egg and more Big bubble wrap. I was nothing to do with the way they were shipped it was just the way the post office treated them. The buyer bought only 24 egg no extra I sent 30. They did lose 12 egg but only 6 that were payed for. I sent the seller 12 more egg on me but I do want the buyer to know that It was not due to packing. I always shack the box very very lightly to back sure I do not hear anything moving around before I seal it all was good. But I do want new people to know that seller cannot control the way the post office handle the boxes. I have got egg wrapped in just plain bag no bubble wrap at all and make it fine. OK I am done just could not take this anymore.

I was going to email you and let you know that I received the eggs and that they were wonderful. I really appreciate you sending me more eggs. As this was my first time I wasnt sure what to do. I never mentioned your name and was not planning to. I just knew we would settle this. I have no hard feelings at all towards you. I agree the post office isnt very gentle with handling their packages.
