Shipped eggs?

It is kind of like gambling.
However, It is a risk some are willing to take when they want a breed that they cant find locally.
Last year I bought duck eggs on Ebay. This year chicken eggs.
I have gotten about 20-30% hatch rate on all of them. Which was 5 different batches from different people.

20% to 30% is at least something. Some folks don't even get a one to hatch out at all. I got last year a 5% rate hatch out and that was from a good breeder. 96 eggs total and 5 chicks hatched.

I bought 5 different sets of eggs off ebay and currently hatching them now. They are from 5 different sellers. Thats about 60 eggs total after accounting for about 10 total broken eggs. So starting with 70 eggs, 12 of which were muscovy.
Right now, 7 muscovy eggs are growing to the 3rd week now. 2 of the 12 were not fertile from what I can tell, and 3 were blood rings.
Of the rest of the chicken eggs, I have 21 left that are in their 2nd week growing. The rest, about 20 blood rings, and the remainder didn't seem to be fertile or very very early quitters.

That leaves me with 28/70 eggs, or less than 50%

Thats just incubating and growing, don't know about hatches yet.

Good luck. I heard a peep awhile ago coming from my incubator. looks like someone is getting ready to pip. Out of the 60+ eggs that I had got off ebay only 16 were left in the incubator, most had been scrambled, or not fertile. Will keep you all updated on my hatch rate from those but many of the eggs are tipped downwards today.

Yes it is hard to get them locally because I am looking for silkies..and polish.. I may just take a chance once and see how it goes... know of any good sellers on there for silkie eggs

Have a look here on BYC you may find someone here that has some. I know Brenda has some but they are not pure. In fact I am expecting some babies from here where the dad is a silky and mom is a BO. I know I see some some days in the trade section so do some checking you may find someone that has some, you never know they may even be close by.

You can try Heirloom Orpingtons, they are in TN, moving to FL, I hatched some of their Silkie eggs in CO where anything over a 25% hatch rate is exceptional. Used to be Hardin Poultry.

I bought 30 eggs of eBay, and 2 were broke but I put them in the incubator with 18 eggs, from a local farm, and a lot of them are veining so I'll hope for the best :)

I have hatched chicken and Peacock eggs that I purchased on ebay. 50% hatch rate on the Peacocks and a little better on the chicken eggs. After a lengthy discussion with the very helpful ladies at my PO, I can say I will always request Priority Express shipping not Priority. It costs more but they are handled completely differently, they are not put on conveyor belts and dropped into giant sorting bins, she said they are always moved by hand. I also try to buy as close to home as possible, from within my state or an adjacent state equals less time in PO hands. You can't always find what you want locally and the barnevelders I just hatched 4out of 7 would have cost me about $72 if I'd purchased chicks from the only local source we have, instead I got them for $25 total from ebay.

So it can be done with some success, read up on some of the info on shipped eggs on here, I didn't turn my barny eggs for the first week because of what I read about damaged air cells, seems to have helped.

hmm that is something new. I never knew we were suppose to not turn them the first week. I will try that this time. However I am not turning my heat up to 101 like someone told me to do with a still incubator. I did that this last time, and even lost most of my own eggs. Nope I believe the 99.5 is perfect for them. I don't care if they come out a day or 2 late or not.

Did you leave eggs in bottoms of cartons or did you lay them down?????
