SHIPPED HATCHING EGGS.....what's your experience been?

I haven't kept any real stats over the years but I would say the majority were good. I only had a 100% failed hatch on shipped eggs but they came from Washington state to Florida and they were totally scrambled. None broken just too far of a haul for them. They were spitzhaubens too!

She offered to resend but I just cut my losses. I didn't want to ruin another batch of her beautiful eggs....
I have had duck, chicken and guinea eggs sent and usually run a 50% or better hatch with them. The closer the shipper is to you, usually the better for the eggs.
This year has been closer to minimum 75% hatch on shipped eggs for me....

12/36 hatched from shipped eggs.

6/18 shipped from GA to AZ
6/18 shipped from TX to AZ.

They are now three weeks old. I'm calling it a success.

I have my first ever shipped eggs in my bator now , they came all the way from NH and I am in OR so literly all the way across the USA , not a single one was broken or cracked but I did notice that sevral of them probly about half or so have movable air cells, thats totally not the senders fault . Stupid post office

They are in my bator and I am useing egg cartons to see if I can get sucessfull hatches out of the ones with air cell issues.

Last year I got 12 duck eggs shipped from an eBay auction. The incubator I used didn't keep the eggs quite warm enough, however, three hatched anyway. Two of them died before long and the third wandered off once it was old enough to free-range and died. But considering the poor incubator I used I'm lucky that any hatched at all.

This year I have some various eggs in the incubator. First batch of Ameraucana eggs is at day 5, I candled them and about 10 had clear signs of life. The others I wasn't sure of--- my candling flashlight tends to have variable light levels. We shall see how the hatch goes.

If you count each source seperately and include quail by the end of next week I will have had 11 hatches from shipped eggs. My first hatch was bad with only 2 chicks out of 24eggs. Most of that was my own fault since it was also my first experience with chickens ever. After that it ranges around 50%. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. About 60% for this last hatch. I'm in Iowa and I've gotten eggs from wyoming, washington, california, texas, arkansas, tennessee, georgia, maine, delaware, north carolina, and ohio. In lots of different weather conditions including the middle of a snowstorm. I haven't had a noticeably worse hatch since my first one. Irregardless of where they come from and what the weather is (provided it's not -30 and I don't order eggs then) the hatch rate has been pretty much the same.

i just bought 6 mottled cochin eggs, they sent me 12, i just candled them and 6 are fertile, i've ordered tons of eggs before, but i would always set them under a broody cochin, i've had chicks out of every bunch not sure of percentage, i don't have the best of luck with incubators, i put my money on a broody cochin anyday

Thanks guys, Well I have an up date! My chicks started hatching right on time, day 21 rolled around and they started pipping! Yay! By Saturday mid afternoon my last chick hatched making 6 chicks that hatched out. Yesterday I put the 6 chicks in the Brooder and my DH and I started pipping the other 8 eggs to see if we could hear anything! The first 2 eggs we checked the chicks stopped developing, those two eggs the shells were very porous

the next 3 had bloodrings, the last 3 were not fertile I'm guessing. The way that I look at is, if I would have bought the six from ideal hatchery I would have paid $16.00 just for the chicks and then on top of that, they charge a small order fee and with tax it would have been a lot more then 25.00 and plus the experience of incubating them and to be able to watch them hatch was awesome. Plus the chicks didn't have to be in the hands of some of the gorillas at the post Office!!!

My last hatch were Jersey Giant eggs that came from Maria Hall in Indiana (shipped to SC) and I got 100% hatch and all are doing well at 7 weeks old. They will be going into the coop on Saturday.

This makes me wish I would have kept track of it. I know I have had a lot of people with chicks hatching...most with good results. And just one cracked egg out of all those shipments
big_smile.png
One box of mixed was smashed by the PO too

Every egg in that box was busted

Well I have great news, I've found more BBSS Cochin Eggs. They're about 60 miles from where I live. She offered to ship them but I'm going to be down there on the 3rd of April and I will be picking up at least 2 dozen eggs I'm hoping for 3 dozen
