Shipping "LIVE" Chickens - Anyone with Experience ?

Yeah the birds ship USPS, our post master is great here and he gets free eggs for taking care of the birds so well. We do need two boxes for some call ducklings to go in when it cools off this fall. Incase you didn't know th PO has set restrictions for high temps. You have to be aware of the temps where you are as well as where theynare going. Nothing over 85 in either location when sending live birds.

Our egg customer use to load us with used egg cartons, but I got tired of blacking out the grading info on them so bought blank pulp cartons. We use them for hatching now too.

It is presently to hot to be shipping chickens. Most of us that ship adult birds from or to any place in the South do not do so from May- Sept. There have been years that I have to wait until Nov. to begin shipping adult birds.

When shipping birds the following should be observed as it is the law:

1. You must have an NPIP certified clean flock.
2. You must obtain the proper shipping forms from your State Vet.
3. You are suppose to contact the State Vet in the State you are shipping to to verify the requirements of that State.

#3 is very very important. For example, NC and VA require that the birds originate from an AI tested clean flock. If not, it is possible the birds can/would be seized at the post office and sent back to you..... by that time they will most likely be DOA.

Shipping to Hawaii is one of the most difficult of all States. The Hawaii Ag Dept. will seize the birds at the airport and you will possibly be fined as well.

Shipping is not hard; you just need to follow the rules. Contact your State Vet and they'll help you get started.

Also, most Poultry Shows will have an area set-up for suppliers to hawk their wares. They usually have shipping boxes for sell.

Luckily we have a couple vets on hand (one that helps out the 4H kids for free with their animals - his kids are in 4H too, and one at church)

Our customer would like her chickens shipped at the end of Sept. Hopefully the weather will be OK by then to ship.

How do you go about tracking down what that state requires ? It's determined by the state it is going to, right ? Who do you think I should contact ?

Is there some kind of state list requirements web site ? Wouldn't that be nice ? Maybe the U.S.P.S. would know ?

Well, that's nice to know that they sell boxes at those shows. Too bad we're not going to one by then. We'll keep an eye out for them next time we go to one -

Thanks so much,

You have misunderstood. Vets mean nothing.

It is your State Vet that you must satisfy.
The USPS knows nothing.

Things are determined by both the State you are sending from and the State you are sending too.

Your State Vet is the chicken god for your State.

State Vet for Florida is:

Dr Thomas Holt
850-410-0900

This is the man you need.

By the way, I would never let a regular vet NEAR MY CHICKENS. They know less than nothing about chickens and their generalizations are USUALLY WRONG. There are exceptions (vets raised on farms, vets that work for or use to work for poultry barns), but very few.

Ah, OK, I'll give him a call tomorrow. Thanks for the reference.

Our vet for the fair is very nice. He's the "vet" for the county fair. It's just so nice that he sees the animals for the kids for free. I know his daughter has chickens and showed them at the fair. Plus, he was the guy doing the testing of all the birds before they were allowed into the tent (drawing their blood under their wing).

I'm pretty sure that state vet won't come to my house to test. I know this vet makes house visits for free to give out certificates of health for animals that are going to chicken shows.

You might be right about the other vet. He is the son of a chicken judge though.

I'll see if our FL state vet knows the name of the vet for the state I'm shipping to.

Better to know now than when the chickens are already in the box or in transit, right ?

WOW ! Foxy Pop Roxy ! You're quick !! I just wrote to you.

Thanks for the legwork. It saves me some time. Actually, I just realized tomorrow's the weekend ! I'll have to put it on my TO DO list for Monday.

We'll be working on our new chicken coop tomorrow. Look for new pics on the Chicken Coops page of our website. Hopefully he can finish up the other nest box. Are you guys working on your chicken coop tomorrow too ?
