Shipping of Hatching Eggs...Information from Post Office today!!

BTW...I'd like to share that you can probably get the styrofoam shippers at your local hospital pharmacy stores for free. They receive medications in them very regularly and usually just throw them away.

I just go by and collect them from outside their door but I got to be a little obsessive about it and had about 50 of them in my garage, so I close my eyes when I walk by there now. The larger ones would make a GREAT incubator!! In fact, I ordered an "incu-kit" that has a fan and heating element combination and I'm going to make a spare incubator. You never know when you're going to need to buy some eggs

Special Handling will only be as good as the people doing their job. I really can't see them handling mail any different, with the volume of mail they are dealing with. I think Ill save that $7.00 and just ship Priority.

I understand your skepticism...that's why I'm giving it a try this time. If there is no difference in the condition of the eggs, I wouldn't consider doing it either. If you've ever seen the YouTube video of "how the post office works", it will make you nauseated to think that boxed eggs are rolling around in that machinery and spit out into a huge pile.

That's why I decided to give it a try this time.

OK...the results are in. I think it is a tossup as to whether it is worth paying the extra $7.40 for special handling.

The purchaser of the 18 eggs reports that all arrived intact (said it took her 30 minutes to unwrap all the eggs

) Out of the 18 eggs shipped, 5 aircells were broken.

I received eggs from 2 different sellers yesterday sent priority without the special handling and here were my results:

Shipper #1: 1 cracked egg (I'm waxing and trying to save it

); 2 aircells broken from 12 eggs
shipper #2: 4 cracked eggs (tossed one, waxed the other 3); 3 aircells broken from 16 eggs

I probably won't pay the extra unless the purchaser requests it in the future. Remember this is only one shipment and the real questions is...does it make a difference statistically...and unless I do a head-to-head trial, the results may not be accurate.

Hi! I had hoped you found something *special*, I guess *special handling* isn't worth the extra money.
I hate to hear about the cracked eggs. How were those wrapped and packed?

Sure wish I could find a source for those styro shippers here.

I have to say I never write live embryos or anything to that kind of identification-so yesterday when I was shipping a box of eggs out my PO gals and guys know me so much and noticed that I DID NOT write fragile-handle with care Please with a big smiley-I said thank you and they gave me a big red sharpie to use to write it-I asked "come on guys you really think it makes a difference when in route and he said Yes-it does-to him and many others-maybe not all but he said he handles the packages carefully that say that:)

So call your local hospital and ask for "pharmacy stores". I'm sure most/all hospitals have one. Then ask them if they have excess styrofoam shippers that you could take off their hands. You might also be able to get them from a local pharmacy like Walgreens, CVS, etc.

Best is to make friends at the pharmacy. We have one at Albertsons and the people there are so friendly and nice to us. They will keep them on the side, as long as I will pick them up once per week. We are there once per week anyway, so this have never been an issue. They are actually quite happy not to throw them into the trash. Turns out the store has to pay for trash removal by the cubic foot. I call that good recycling.

Exactly. If the lady at the counter didn't even know it exsisted, how much do you think all the other people handling your package is going to know .. and are they REALLY treating the package any different?
