Shoes in the house?

I rent out rooms to tenants. I'm Japanese, and I make it very clear before they move in that outdoor shoes are not to be worn inside the house. If you didn't like that rule, would you move in? If you did move in, would you follow the rule, ignore the rule or sneak around it? I have had two tenants now who seem to think that this is an optional rule, and I'm trying to understand, hence the poll.

I would follow that rule. It's not worth sneaking around. Besides, barefeet is better. You don't smell as bad and you don't have that clod of dirt from the park mixed with the gum from the parking lot at the hinky-dinky grocery store down the street smacking around on the floor.

Or dog poop, bird poop, deer poop, or other nasty things that are all over the ground in a semi rural area. I even have a separate pair of shoes that are "garden" shoes that I only wear on my property.

I have house shoes and slippers for inside, certain boots for chores, and others for wearing to town.

If you think about what you walk through in town, grocery stores, at work, sidewalks (spit, gum, other peoples who knows what from who knows were) then you wear those same shoes in the house and track in all that ick? I get grossed out town ick is different that coop and yard ick, but I don't want either all over in the house.

People who put their shoes on furniture are worse. I'm fine if you put your socked feet or barefeet on a footrest, but your icky shoes shouldn't ever go there.

I do barefeet outside even, but if I step in something I always make sure it's GONE gone before I walk into the house.
