I rent out the two upstairs rooms in my house, so they're living with me. I can understand not wanting to live like that, but if you agree to it BEFORE you move in, I don't understand not being willing to keep the agreement. I'm trying to understand why people think that it's okay to agree then try to get around it.

I completely understand that taking shoes off doesn't match everyone's lifestyle, but I am trying to understand why someone would agree to rules, then sneak around them and get upset when I find out and say something.
I completely understand and would feel the exact same way. I don't think your request is unreasonable, it's just really really hard to find good tenants. Hopefully they have a short lease?

Could you put a sign on the door they use to come in the house? At least for a few days to get the point across?

I'll do that when I get new tenants. This guy is only here until June or July. I do month to month lease so it's easy to get out if things aren't working out. Maybe I can find a doormat that says that.

Some people are just rude and inconsiderate, but they could also be forgetting or not realising how much of an issue it is for you. Are you making it clear when you first explain the house rules that you take this very seriously and it's not just a kind of "guideline" that they should probably try to remember about?

(Apologies if you already are doing that. Just trying to think of other explanations than your tenants are awful people!)

I probably just wouldn't be a tenant there because I have major issues with feeling any kind of floor texture or grit on my feet, I have indoor dogs so that's always going to be a problem for me so I wash my feet daily (especially before bed) and shower with my shoes on. I'm just not able to handle the barefoot life.
If I was a tenant though I'd try to remember to respect your house rules. For a long time that was the rule in my mother's house but I'm extremely forgetful and I probably forgot it more than I remembered it.

Also a lot of my friends have the no shoes rule and it drives me crazy because I'm anxious about accidentally forgetting to remove my shoes and also dreading the feeling of discomfort that comes from being barefoot, it feels like the equivalent of having to remove my shirt and hang it on the coat tree😂

I wear my shoes from morning till night - so I would only rent from someone with that rule as a last resort. But I would definitely follow your rules if I was renting from you!

Edit: Incidentally, your post made me realize my toes are so cold I can’t even feel them (I’ve been standing outside) so thank you 🙏!

Depending on how your entry way is set up, it would be funny to have the cute cat one outside with the "please" and then at the point inside where the no shoes rule is in effect, use the Off with your shoes!

Then it would be like asking nicely followed by the order

I remember my piano teacher had a rule that you had to take your shoes off in the house. He had an entryway with a space to set the shoes down inside. Giraffe statue with a remind around its neck.
