I rent out rooms to tenants. I'm Japanese, and I make it very clear before they move in that outdoor shoes are not to be worn inside the house. If you didn't like that rule, would you move in? If you did move in, would you follow the rule, ignore the rule or sneak around it? I have had two tenants now who seem to think that this is an optional rule, and I'm trying to understand, hence the poll.

Who voted for what is not viewable, so please be honest.

I was raised with no shoes in the house.
It is why slippers are made.

I always take my shoes off at the door. Just a habit from growing up, maybe, as we couldn't have shoes on in the house.

With free-range chickens, it's a given.

Once a week, in the winter, hubby will trudge into the kitchen with his boots on because the outside water is shut off. He fills jugs to take to the waterers, so he has an excuse. The kitchen floor gets sanitized after he's done.
That is not an excuse. I am in and out of the house all day long. Because of this, I have shoes which are pull on and for boots I have cowboy boots.

Follow the rules. I have indoor shoes, outdoor shoes, coop shoes. Each pair stays where they're used. I have orthotics, so going without any shoes for a significant period of time isn't an option as my knees start to hurt. Outdoor shoes stay on the mat outside the door, next to my coop shoes. Inside shoes stay inside.

I'm sorry your tenants aren't following the rules. That's rude.

I don’t wear my yard shoes anywhere but in the yard, but we do wear shoes in the house on occasion.

BUT it’s your house, your rules! If you asked not to wear shoes, then the shoes stay outside. And if you asked to dress like a clown and wear a quail as a hat, then they should comply!

I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble with your tenants.

I remember my piano teacher had a rule that you had to take your shoes off in the house. He had an entryway with a space to set the shoes down inside. Giraffe statue with a remind around its neck.
I keep a shoe rack right next to the door. It's convenient to have a place for the shoes where you can put them on right as you're going out or take them off right when you're coming in.
