Shoot the bird?

I disagree... placing the shot right at the base of the skull instantly severs the spinal cord. That's a faster death than breaking a chicken's neck, chopping its head off, or slicing the jugular. I can't comment on pithing, because I haven't tried that yet.

Can someone explain to me what pithing is? I have seen the term but not sure of its meaning.

Pithing is when you stick a knife/pointy object into the brain via the mouth. If you did it right, there is a SQUAWK and the body automatically loosens all the feathers. (The squawk isn't the bird in pain, it is the sudden rush of air past the noise making thingy mabober.)

I doubt its as fool proof as you say because your last post said you had to shoot your rooster three times and then still had to cut its head off. It does not sound like a faster death to me.
Animals should not have to suffer like that when they die. Sorry I find this upsetting.

22's are notorious for ricochets. If you still think shooting is your best option I would try these:

They are quiet, you don't have to be spot on accurate and don't have to worry about a stray bullet going through your neighbors house. The only draw back is the effective range. You still have to be within a couple of feet to ensure enough shot is delivered to the desired area. You don't want to be picking the stuff out of the edible portions of the bird. I have used these to cull sick birds before and it is very effective.

Yes, one bird had to be shot 3 times. But that was one bird out of a hundred or more that I've dispatched in the past couple of years. And I did say, in case you missed it, that I might have to rethink my method.

Are you all saying you've never have to chop more than once? Or that feeling yourself bleed to death isn't stressful? I don't think so.

Bottom line, we all do what we're most comfortable with, and what we feel is best for our birds.

Come on people. I don't believe that anyone will intentionally dispatch their chickens in a way to purposely cause them a cruel death. It doesn't matter how it's done, if done enough times will cause at least one bad experience. It it is a bit morbid but it's a way of life on a farm and although I have taken the life of many chickens, rabbits, ducks, cows, pigs I still appreciate the animal and treat each death with dignity. It's not pleasureably. Please don't argue about which way of DEATH is more humane, it is still death and your preferred method may change the way you feel about it's humanity the next time you do it.

I've shot many roo's with my 22. never had a problem. There really isn't that much blood in a chicken no matter how you kill them. I've cut many heads off too. I'm good either way.

Are you serious?!! I hope to God they have put that chicken out of its misery by now. Why on earth would they not finish the job?
Thats is cruel and inhumane.

Once they caught it they put it out of his misery..I was horrified when they told me what had happened..
