Be sure to check into zoning laws before putting your fence up.
In my county, we do not need a permit if ALL of the fence is under 6'. I suppose that means posts and all. Sounds like you might need your fence to be higher than 6'. If the neighbor is "on the fence" concerning the fence, you don't want him calling the zoning board on him.
Also, an inexpensive way to increase the height of a fence is to add 2"x4" wire to the inside of a fence above the top. I had to do that to our 4' picket fence to keep a dog from jumping out. It didn't distract from the looks of the wooden fence and did the job. From a distance all you see is the wood. It made the total height 6'. You could do the same with a 6' fence to make it taller. I would guess that an 8' fence would be expensive.
