Shorter Day Cycle Layers

Does anyone have a good recommendation on a layer breed that lays well during the shorter day cycles of the year?

I think the standard attack on that problem has been to simply make so birds are exposed to a longer day length which is easy indoors when electricity is available.

My Leghorns continued laying through winter when the daylight hours dropped to around 8 hours a day. My RIR hen laid fairly well through winter, but not as frequently as the Leghorns. They were young hens though, it was their first winter.
