Should he go or not?

chcknrs, are your chickens missing lots of feathers too? Mine are a bit bald on their backs, the black ones anyways, the white ones are not too bad. I think this is normal??

Mine aren't bald at all, but I locked up the roos as soon as it started happening. I caught them both at it, grabbing a chunk of feathers from the hens and ripping them out. They aren't even quite full grown yet. They're Leghorns, so I kinda expected it, but not this bad! I'm now hoping my mystery chick is a nice roo, but won't find out for at least several more weeks, about the same time I'm enjoying fresh chicken dinner.

I think some loss of feathers is normal with breeding, but these roo's are just plain mean!

I have two roos. If the feathers are falling out and thinning (and they are not just molting), he is wearing them out. They are like well paid street walkers. The poor hens are getting too much of his stuff (if you know what I mean). Either increase the amount of hens in the pen or decrease the amount of "quality" time he can spend with them. I let the girls range roam and leave King in the pen. I will put Duke out with them because he will protect them without using them up. Give him something to do when he is penned with them like hanging a bagel or head of cabbage just above the level of his head. The energy he puts into jumping to get it will occupying him and tire him out so he doesn't tire out the girls.

Hope it helps.

So it seems he is pimpin my hens!

I guess that is why he is just crowing all the time!

To be honest........ when my roos are bad, I gently spank their bottoms and then they behave (until the next time and the next spanking). But they are getting better. I must admit. I did tell one that he would be dinner and he kinda looked at me in amazement.

Everybody has a different method of dealing with rooster aggression. What works in one case will not work in another. IMO each person needs to evaluate the roo before them and determine what will work. I once had a RIR that was the sweetest mean rooster you ever saw

I mean, you could pick him up whenever you wanted to, pet him, carry him around, move him on the roost, and he'd never bat an eye. But every so often, he just had to take a swipe at my feet. Like he was being forced to against his will by the voices in his head

That was the toughest case I ever had by far, because a mean roo won't last 10 seconds here. But a sweet, mean roo?

We are now trying something else. Hubby let him out of the pen and he is just hanging around and does not seem to mind anyone being around?? I guess maybe he was just being protective of his gals? My son is going to be here Tuesday, so he has that long to show if he is sincere!
