Should I Adopt a Rooster?

How big? Maybe a Jersey Giant ! ! ! Yee Haw, score! Anyway, I love my roosters. They take care of the girls, find treats for them, feather the nest for them, and sound the predator alert for them, and so on .... I say, try it ..... If you don't like him, you can always give him to someone who will.

I live in East Durham, by Falls Lake. Between Cheek Road and 98.

The APS has five roosters, if you want one! Poor fellows.

OOOPs Alyssa, I was just kidding! Hope you don't get a bunch of vagabond roosters showing up on your doorstep! (you could edit out that info....) But I still think you should try one if you can.

That's funny--that's the reason I decided against it! I am so worried a rooster would lead the girls up into the road. They've never gone on their own before.

Personally, none of my hens have expressed a desire to have a rooster. The times i have introduced roosters (hatched them) it usually ends up with the girls running and screaming all the time with the rooster in hot pursuit. i end up feeling sorry for the girls and rehoming the rooster.

i do have one showgirl roo in with two hens. They barely tolerate him. The few times he has managed to mate them, they spend the next 15 minutes chasing him and pulling the feathers out of his back. And then now, he has taken to trying to attack me when i enter the pen. Sheesh!

i would love to find a nice friendly rooster. It just hasn't happened yet.
