Should I be proud of myself, or ashamed?

I am proud of you. Thare are some animals that nature would never allow to live, and with our interventions we cause them more suffering in the long run.

I had to do two out of this last batch I hatched, I broke their necks. I dont know if I could do the snip, though. I never thought about it . That would probably be easier on them, though.

And I diddnt think it was so horribly graphic. Just my vote...

I feel that it was humane and would have done the same.

sometimes its hard to do but about half way through last year i started the samething. My then 14 year old tried to save a few so did ok some did not. She took it very hard when one did not so it does save her some problems.

YOu have my support also- I recently culled a check with leg problems. Years before I had kept one alive like this. He was beautiful Buff Cochin Rooster. He grew up and I had to keep him in a cage his whole life. And he could only crawl around on his legs and they always appeared so raw and damaged. I decided not to let this chick suffer the same fate. So Congrats to you on being strong and doing the right thing!!

you did the right thing and the none of the ways to do it are pretty...I have had to euth a number of animals over my life time and it was a heart ache everytime...but we have to live in real time and do the right thing for them...

Life is full of hard decisions. Sometimes a humane end is the reasonable decision. I have 3 sick kittens...failing to thrive - even with lots of medical support. I cannot afford to continue to treat them (I'm at 300 so far), so a humane end is the appropriate decision.

I agree. You did the right thing by putting it out of it's misery or "culling it". It's a hard thing to do but necessary. Good for you and good for the brood. Now stop worrying and go enjoy your other chicks!

I think you did the right thing! Some just can't be saved, and you had the compassion to end it before it got too bad, and you did it humanely too.

i've had to do it before, it's good to know that you do it if need be, the next thing i'm getting a shotgun for those pesky chicken killers!!!
