My biggest buff Orpington pullet "big red" has something going on with her toes. She is not favoring the foot and it does not seem to be hindering her. Could it be a birth defect of some kind. She is carrying on nicely and doesn't seem to be in pain. Should I be worried?

It can happen in the egg. The toes start growing crooked. It is fixable when they are babies, but I think it's too late for your pullet sadly. They can live fine like that.

Okay. Thank you for the info. Now I can watch for it when I further my flock. She's still a gorgeous bird regardless. I'm just thankful it's nothing serious to worry about.

Why is that? Is it genetic?

If it doesn't cause her any difficulties a test breeding or two *might* tell you if it's genetic. First breed to her father- half of their DNA IS the same. However, since the problem may not be from father, also breed to a full brother, though they may share less than half of their DNA. If it's a problem that causes life altering problems- test breeding requires more thinking.
