Should I build a coop using this existing structure if so, how?

Whatever you do, make sure you implement a pest management plan. That close to your house makes it easy for mice and rats to infiltrate your home. Why live in the woods when there's a safe, warm, and dry basement right next to the free all-you-can-eat buffet?

Pest management starts with coop design. No dead spaces or insulated walls to live in, pest proof storage of feed, pest proof feeders, a run with hardware cloth floor to eliminate burrowing in.

The plan extends to chickenkeeping practices. Lock feed away at night, prevent feed spillage, prevent accumulation of food scraps in the run.

Lastly, employ methods of population control. Traps, poisons, and deterrents.
