Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

The big girls are loving their new coop! I am still trying to get everyone to lay in the nest boxes... I've found a few on the floor of the coop. But most days they are in the boxes.
I moved the babies out into the little coop after some modifications.... we put some boards up the inside walls and insulated them, then put a litterbox turned nest box directly under the nest. So far they seem ok, and I'll be checking on them throughout the night. I'm really hoping that they do ok, because I really don't want to have to bring them back in the house. The kids won't leave them alone! LOL....

congratulations mortie!

they all look very cozy lindz, I'm sure the chicks will be perfect! love the pics everyone! I'll catch up on more in the morning! Saturday night and i'm crashing before 10...

The kids are my niece and nephews in Ohio... Located one hour from Meyer Hatchery!
The puppy is my son (dh is the one that wanted Sturgis) Harley. He was a Pom a Poo. He died a tragic (and expensive! $4500!) death thanksgiving morning 2010.
Sturgis is a shih-poo (I just call him a poo poo!!). He really does look like Harley though! The kids thought he was the same dog, and wouldn't stop laughing at my "joke" and calling Sturgis Harley.

We got THREE eggs today!! The new bigger and better chicken run is framed. The poultry fencing goes up tomorrow and the coop gets moved. The girls are going to be happy with their larger digs. I am also putting in a dust bath area and branches for perching. PLUS... they will get a flower pot or two with some kind of shrub. Maybe even a raised herb garden. It was hard, yet gratifying work.

We went to TSC again for another bag of shavings because I sent the first one with my aunt in law... they only had 3 little bantam chicks, and they weren't looking very well.... I passed, because I didn't want to bring anything home to the ones I already have!

We went to my grandma's and hauled her trash off and visited for a bit... then went and picked up windows from the Habitat for humanity restore for the big coop. I want to get some more light in there! We bought 2 wood frame windows, and a metal framed window for the door, for $10! Then came home, fixed up the little coop, got it bedded ect, and moved the chicks in.
I only got 6 eggs today.... these girls better pick up the pace again, or I won't be able to make my orders!

Today was our best egg day ever!

8 from the big girls (out of 11)
2 bantam Cochin egglets
2 Serama egglets
AND 1 Silkie egg! The first one since I got her! Wahoo!

So that is a grand total of 13 eggs! (only 6 slackers today) Of course you have to ignore the fact that several of the eggs are so small a tablespoon could hold the entire contents. But they're still eggs, right?

Heck, I'd even count a hummingbird egg.

Speaking of hummingbirds, if you like them, there is a cool webcam that documents a wild hummer lay, hatch and raise her chicks. Two clutches per season. Look up Phoebe Allens. I also like the Decorah eagles webcam. Both ends of the bird spectrum!
